We desperately need regulation to hold political parties et al to the same standards as newspapers and advertising when it comes to disinformation such as this. Ideally the Tories would be forced to delete the tweet, and post an equally-prominent correction.

It’s when they go off brand and pretend to be a fact checking site that makes me laugh. This from the party that’s taken lying, cronyism and incompetence to new heights for any party.

The only ship sunk by a torpedo during the conflict was The Belgrano. And that of course was a war crime.

Incorrect. Even the Captain of the Belgrano know this.

How can the captain of the ship know better than some old duffer on a football message board?

The rules for newspapers are toothless which is why so much misinformation and distortion is perpetuated in the media generally. What is required is a proper independent media regulator that has real powers to properly hold publishers to account.

Tories being Tories on 08:58 - Oct 11 with 1952 views | DJR | I know Trump is awful at this sort of thing, but the Tories and right wing media are not really any better and have been making up stories or twisting facts to denigrate Labour for as long as I can remember. Tories being Tories on 09:04 - Oct 11 with 1922 views | DJR | His uncle was on a ship which sank, and the Tories are picking him up on semantics. For a party supposedly so much in favour of the armed forces, scoring such a cheap political point could be viewed as an attempt to denigrate his uncle's service, which is not a good look. I have found in life that whenever a story comes out on a subject that you know there are always errors/mistakes/untruths. No matter what the topic or viewpoint. Everywhere. Always.

No it wasn't. It was an armed Argentine Navy battle cruiser which was engaged by a submarine from the nation Argentina had declared war on. It was a completely legitimate military target, attacked with conventional weapons. The "Exclusion Zone" is utterly irrelevant. Had the RAF flown over the wreckage strafing survivors, that would have been a war crime. Had it been an Argentine Factory Trawler, with no military purpose, outside the Exclusion Zone, that would have been a war crime. The flagship (or any ship) of the enemy navy is a legitimate target in war, anywhere.

I think he knew that though.
