The first foul was, but then Clarke decided he wanted to haul him down once they got into the area.

The referee didn't agree with you. He, correctly, gave a free kick for the initial elbow in the throat. That wasn't a clear and obvious error, because it was correct. Lewis-Potter then pushed himself across Clarke, then down, when the elbow/arm had been pushing him away. That's how I saw it, having seen all the angles.

If the referee decided to give a free kick for the initial contact, outside the box, then the ball would not be in play when any subsequent contact inside the box. VAR got it wrong. At least 7 goals, a sending off and VAR to discuss should get a good number of minutes coverage on MOTD.

The referee didn't blow up when they were tussling outside the area. He blew up when Clarked dragged their player down. That happened in the area. The ref made a error and VAR checked it. When the referee viewed the footage he agreed with VAR.

He didn't. Watch the replay. The ref blows when the Brentford player is brought down, not during the initial contact. I've watched it several times.

Except the referee wasn't shown it again so didn't get a chance to agree or not. If there was a foul outside the box it can't be a penalty. You don't give the deco from where it finished, it is from where it started.

He’s not. The foul, if it was even that was committed out of the box. Just because they collapsed into each other doesn’t make it a pen. He’s stating the obvious not that it discounts yet another Muric howler.

The ref went over to the screen and watched the replay and agreed it was a penalty. Watch the replay. He doesn't blow for a foul until Clarke hauls their player down, which is in the box. https://www.skysports.com/football/video/19530/13242008/brentford-4-3-ipswich-to

My stream didn't show him going to the screen? I thought he was just told it was in the box and pointed. I still disagree with it, very soft. Clarke's last week was more of a pen.

I think the referee didn't view the replay. He was told it was a penalty by the VAR crew, and gave it without looking at the monitor. If I am right about that it is another bizarre aspect of it.

That's what I saw live, too. Premier League stream. The referee was over by the penalty area when he heard something on his earpiece, then gave the penalty.

The way I saw it the initial foul started outside the box. Therefore a free kick should have been awarded outside of the box. Harry Clarke second yellow was also questionable. Looks like he played the ball, but however if it was slightly mid timed was the offence worthy of a yellow card. I’ve seen worse fouls during the game that didn’t result in bookings. Guess we just have to take it on the chin.
