"It's the economy, stupid" - my analysis 09:26 - Nov 6 with 3982 viewsbaxterbasics

Harris was bussed in untested without any primary selection process. No particular record to boast of as a largely invisible VP.

She offered little beyond relying on women and minorities to turn out in big numbers for her.

But the female vote barely shifted. Turns out abortion rights aren't the biggest concern for most of them, and in any case, Trump successfully distanced himself from the issue in voters minds. As for other minorities, most actually moved in Trumps favour, Latinos in particular, most of whom share the concern about loose borders. Even black men, whilst still largely voting Dem, shifted slightly towards Trump. The democrats reliance on identity politics and demographics has been exposed.

How did The Donald do it? All he had to do was ask the question "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" and appear to be shot at on TV. It's unlikely he has the answers to fix that problem of course, nor is it fair to blame all of that on the outgoing team. But most voters won't think that deeply about it. Many when questioned even admitted they know he isn't a good man on any measure, but they wanted him in place nonetheless.

When 'ordinary working people' feel worse off this will trump (lol) just about any other issue. He knew that, the Dems ignored it at their peril. A lesson not just for them, but for the government here too. Regardless of his unsuitability for the job, politically he played a blinder, and now looks set to win the popular vote (which no Republican has since 2004), and control of the Senate, possibly the House of Reps too. A huge mandate and the tools to do what he wants.

I hope both parties next time round will have a long and careful look at how they select their candidates - barring any tinkering with the constitution, they should be fresh faces. Americans need better options to choose from.

There are umpteen examples I could present to back this up but I will go with this one:

Indeed.

How depressing by Guthrum 6 Nov 2024 8:51
It was the economy. Trump benefitted from a mild global upswing following the crash of 2008/09, Biden got the fallout from Covid and the war in Ukraine. The basis for that is ignored, people just remember their cost of living is more than it was four years ago.

The Democrat policy on forced gender reassignment for children didn't help, nor the known fact that men's penises shrivel up and drop off under a woman leader.

And team Trump was saying the same thing about a Dem victory. (Through the shipping in of migrants and suppression of speech).

Let's hope the US constitution and her institutions are robust enough to prevent this. They probably are. Probably...

Don’t underestimate how a lot of Americans love love love to hear “we’re going to embark on a mass deportation of illegals” despite the fact it won’t happen because those illegals are crucial to the economy. Just hearing their leader saying he hates black/brown people is a huge vote winner.

The economy’s not even bad, unemployment at record lows, house prices booming.

The Dems were a little arrogant and a little smug with their campaigning. And now we’ll all suffer.

People with money are afraid of the Democrat socialist agenda, even though it’s not really socialist. So my guess it was less about the economy and more about fear.

People are fascinated with Trump. He has charisma to many. Not me - he’s a self serving, criminal, fascist, sexist, ignorant, bankrupt pig of a creature who I wouldn’t p£ss on if he was on fire, but to Americans he’s box office. A soap opera on legs. I was in America first time around during the primaries and nobody in the media was interested in anyone else.

Lastly, it didn’t matter how good Harris was, what she promised or anything else. She’s a woman and there’s no way in swathes of America that a female will ever get elected for years to come. That’s how backward that country is in some ways.

This - real terms pay growth has been negative for most of the post COVID period. Whilst the US economy has grown strongly, few have actually benefited from it.

A lot of this is from factors out of the Democrats control, but pumping 100’s of billions into the economy at a time of huge inflation was just madness.

It's not just since Covid that the average American hasn't really advanced much in terms of wages.

I don't know, Tulsi Gabbard might be in a good position to be the Republican candidate next time round. If they don't just coronate JD Vance. Would be a nice twist if it's their side that produces the first female pres. Albeit one that until quite recently, was a Democrat.

people were better off than they were 4 years ago - real wages had risen and had risen most for the lowest paid. so it's not a case of the economy have underperformed - it's a question of why did people fall for trump telling them they were worse off, and why did they feel worse off. it's a much longer term issue of working class communities losing out over decades and politicians not seeming to be concerned. the democrats need to turn themselves around to focus on the things those communities care about and then hold trump to account when he fails to deliver on any of them.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

First Paragraph largely also reflects situation here.

I said this on the main thread.

"And at the end of the day, "it's the economy, stupid" that appears to have won the day, with a huge dollop of concerns about immigration thrown in."

It doesn't really get any less wrong regardless of how many times you post it. This reflects a deep misunderstanding of American politics.

These explanations are the rationalizations that voters give themselves and that's because these rationalizations have been dogmatically pounded into their brains by relentless advertising campaigns that prey on their insecurities, fears, and prejudices.

Londoners live closer to Zagreb than I do to Mexico, yet I receive a constant stream of racist ads that target the threats posed by Mexican immigrants every election cycle. Trump was the president for four years, why would he be the architect of the solution for a problem he never got around the fixing in those four years? He sabotaged a bi-partisan immigration bill that would have passed without his interference because the issue was instrumental to his campaign. Nixon did the same when he used back channels to sabotage a peace deal with North Vietnam that prevented the end of the war until after his election.

The economy has been better under Biden than it was under Trump. As a point of fact, it usually does better under Democratic administrations than it does under Republican administrations, with occasional exceptions. The most disastrous economy in American history was during the administration of a laissez-faire Republican, yet these myths about deregulation and austerity as being central to a successful economy persist.

These issues have essentially nothing to do with the outcomes of American elections. The American public supports higher taxes on the wealthy. The American public supports universal healthcare. These aren't the issues that move elections.

Winning elections comes down to identity politics. It is our nature to take sides. If you can get the majority of the electorate to identify more strongly with you than your opposition, then you will win.

You can read about this phenomenon:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In-group_and_out-group

Party affiliation does the bulk of the work for any political candidate when it comes to a general election. It should be deeply concerning to anyone without a horse in this race that the segment of the American public that isn't firmly entrenched with one party or the other identifies more strongly with Trump than any alternative.
