Despicable conduct by Biden 09:36 - Dec 2 with 3772 views | redrickstuhaart | Pardoning his son. Normalising corrupt behaviour and undermining the concept of integrity in public office. Utterly hypocritical of Trump to criticise it, of course. But that doesnt make the criticism wrong.

Despicable conduct by Biden on 09:51 - Dec 2 with 2647 views | Guthrum | I can see his point, in that it is a politically motivated, disproportionate and unusual pursuit for what would normally be a relatively minor offence, with no aggravating factors. But, given Joe Biden previously declared he wouldn't do such a thing and the obvious nepotism issue, it is disappointing. Also, integrity in public office is gone from the USA for a while and no amount of good examples will change anything.

Agreed, he shouldn't have done it. The fact he's allowed to is bonkers.

He has of course already pardoned some of his previous cabinet and advisors and now his future to be ambassadors. Doesn’t make what Biden has done ethically correct, but you can see why he’s done it. As an Ipswich analogy, it feels like when we wished we had people who could do those ‘dark arts’ and sh!thousing other clubs always had. Then we got Morsy :)

Indeed, my view exactly. It was clearly politically motivated but he loses credibility for criticising Trump for similar actions with his supporters. His party needs to show integrity through the years to come.
Despicable conduct by Biden on 10:03 - Dec 2 with 2529 views | DarkBrandon | I thought this summed it up quite well. I don't love it either, but I'm not sure how you tell a man that he should let his only surviving son rot in prison to respect norms, institutions, and the rule of law, when the country you devoted your life to serving just pretty comprehensively voted they don't give a shit about any of that. — Dmitry Grozoubinski (@explaintrade.com) 2024-12-02T08:18:14.933Z Text here: I don't love it either, but I'm not sure how you tell a man that he should let his only surviving son rot in prison to respect norms, institutions, and the rule of law, when the country you devoted your life to serving just pretty comprehensively voted they don't give a sh.t about any of that. I don't think there's any excuse or justification for the pardon, primarily because the value of NOT going down that route is so high in setting an example, as futile as that may seem. It allows Trump et al to justify further ratcheting down of the system. If it was a demonstrable miscarriage of justice, fair enough, but this is just corruption-lite.

Despicable conduct by Biden on 10:18 - Dec 2 with 2397 views | durhamj | It's certainly disappointing, but not overly surprising. The moral high ground has shrunk somewhat, but the issue will be overshadowed when no doubt Trump pardons all those convicted over the insurrection a few year back.

I think he's just resigned to Trump doing exactly the same in January (again). Trump has already said those jailed for Jan 6th will be pardoned. All Presidents use the pardon system, Trump is one of the biggest abusers of it. Bannon, Stone, Di Souza, Kushner etc. As Dark Brandon says above, why let your surviving son rot in jail off the back of what was a politically motivated investigation when you literally have the power to make it go away. Yes, you lose some credibility, but given how the US appears to be heading, I assume he thought "feck it!"

Indeed. I dont buy the witch hunt argument. Its 1.4m dollars of tax evasion. That is not minor or political. [Post edited 2 Dec 2024 10:27]

Although Jared's father had spent his time in prison as a result of his crime, Trump expunged the crime from his criminal record. Biden has pardoned Hunter before a criminal court can even sentence him.

People can try and justify it whichever way they want, but this makes everything 100x harder for the Dems going forwards, especially when Biden had said he wouldn't. But then this is the Democrat party that were happy to lie and cover up Biden's unfitness for office for way too long so we shouldn't be surprised - but it absolutely stinks and is totally inexcusable.

Understandable and I admit I don't know the ins-and-outs of the case, but if there's guilt there, irrespective of whether the investigation was politically motivated, that has to be the defining factor so long as the sentencing is proportionate. I don't like the fact that we seem to think about personal credibility or lack thereof, when the infinitely more important issue of the rapid erosion of a lawful and civil society is at stake.

1.4m? Trump is/was up for 300x that and that has been expunged because he has won election. Trump has also pardoned people who have been liable for much higher amounts (Di Souza as an example) It's not right, but it will be child's play compared to what Trump will do and has already done.

So what? The point is that you cannot write off tax evasion of that nature as a politically motivated witch hunt.

Based on ethics, yes it is inexcusable. But if you think this stinks and is inexcusable, the next 4 years are going to be fun. Hell, Day 1 is going to be 100x the corruption and 'stink level' of this. Biden has just made Trump's future actions appear more normal which helps no-one.

The tax evasion element isn't the 'witch-hunt'. It was the other elements which would not normally see a private citizen hauled through House and Senate hearings by the GOP.
