ME's 5 Year Plan 15:22 - Dec 31 with 4273 viewsjasondozzell

Town win versus Chelsea made me think of ME and the 5 year plan from December 2016.

To provide a significant ongoing financial commitment to the club’s academy, enabling a steady flow of players into the first-team

To provide a sustainable and competitive squad salary budget

To make annual investment funds available to purchase players in the early stages of their career and to assist in their development

Maintaining a stable management and coaching team

To develop a team to play attractive and exciting football

Ironically I would say we've now cracked each and every one! Just a few years later and via a path none of us could have predicted.

And in a way, I hope last night's result might have given ME, boyhood Chelsea fan, a bit of a smile. For all his sins, he did the right thing by us by writing off the debt and securing good buyers.

5 year plan complete!

There has never been a better example of the phrase 'back of a fag packet' than that 5 point plan.

I still can't quite believe he thought it was a good idea to share it.

😁 It really was pie in the sky stuff wasn't it. A pretty blatant bit of PR to try and stem the growing disquiet.

Nothing measurable in there just words. And when the decision making was conducted by Evans then there wasn’t much hope of seeing anything tangible from it.

And the serious lack of funding which wouldn’t allow any of the above.

Honestly, what a load of bullocks all that was. That’s not a plan, just a list things that football clubs do when they’re football clubs, such as “pay the players”.

The only good thing I can say about Evans is that he was so dismal it makes the current times all the more sweet.

He didn’t care about this club one iota and despite still being a minority shareholder would definitely have preferred a Chelsea win. Good riddance to his reign and that grim era.

The debt is literally the only good thing he did, lets not pretend he went looking for the buyers, don't forget, until we played out a pulsating 0-0 (Arf!) with Rochdale, he wasn't even going to sell.

“ For all his sins, he did the right thing by us by writing off the debt and securing good buyers”.

You know why he wrote off the debt? Because nobody was going to buy a club saddled with that level of debt on top of the amount of additional investment required to put right Evans 14 years of neglect. That’s why he had no option but to write it off!

As for finding the right buyers, I imagine that was nothing more than dumb luck judging by the fact he didn’t get any meaningful decision right in his tenure here.

Even then he didn't have much choice other than to eventually write it off as he was never going to recover it.

The thing is, everybody knew it was a load of old waffle at the time. Attendances were already down to those that went by habit, for social reasons, routine, hope not expectation (average 16,291) And there wasn’t much of that.

I’ve always held the view that Evans was a dreadful owner. Maybe not as bad as people like the Blackpool idiot, but that’s a bit like being grateful for only losing one leg and not two.

In my view Evans was a chancer. He saw the opportunity for a quick flip and when that opportunity went down the pan it was cut the losses time. Had he remained as owner, we’d have been in L2, lower or out of business.

‘Thank you Marcus’? Not from me. I agree with the view that sale to Gamechanger had everything to do with the best deal he could get and nothing to do with the wellbeing of the club.

We deserved some luck after the catastrophe of Administration then dementor Evans. I was passing Portman Road when his name was being ripped off the West Stand roof. I can’t tell you the joy that gave me.

The only reason he had to do what he did at the end was because he was so hopeless for the 13 years prior.

I was in his offices at least 3 years after we beat Arsenal in the Cup semi 1st leg and the TV was still showing clips of Tamas Priskin's goal. Hilarious.

With hindsight, and detachment, I rather view him as the 'Tim Nice But Dim' of football owners.

There never seemed to be any negative intention with his ownership of the club. He bought in at a time when he was relatively wealthy by 'football owner' standards, made some cr@p decisions, and the game very quickly got away from him.

Even if he did the bare minimum he kept the club going, at a time when other owners were showing that it was more than easy enough to just cut the money off and attempt to wind things up if things weren't going well.

When he did come to sell, it does seem that he did his due diligence in trying to source a decent buyer, rather than any of the number of asset-stripping sharks that are in the market at any given time; for every Gamechanger there must be plenty of Chansiris/Dai Yonggs/Ken Andersons etc., and I've no reason to doubt his claims that he'd turned down multiple bids that were not right for the club.

I've no significant ill will towards the chap. He naïvely bought a football club thinking that it was an easy money-spinner, and was proven wrong.

Spot on analysis. When he bought it looked like a 4-5 million transfer window would give you a good chance of kicking on for promotion from the champ. But very quickly that money would barely be enough to cover a few players' salaries for a year.

His tenure was a disaster and he should really have been more honest about it all and actually tried to show some of the apparent 'business intelligence' the ME group traded on but I think he did turn down other bids and clearly thought this one was a good move for the club.
