We are so close 20:23 - Jan 5 with 2833 views | Asa | Robbed against Leicester of 2 extra points. Brentford we could easily have been 3 up by half time, could have potentially gone in ahead, could have held on at the end and still could have equalised. 2-3 extra points. Bournemouth we are minutes away from a win. We get none. 3 extra points potentially there too. Fulham we are an inch or two from sealing it with a minute left and instead end up drawing. 2 points lost. That’s 10-11 points. That puts us mid-table. Some of it bad luck like the width of a post at Brentford and Fulham, some terrible decisions like Leicester and some self inflicted. But even half of those points and we’d be absolutely thrilled. We really are doing so very well and have improved a lot of late. A tiny bit more improvement and we’ll be in great shape. M That is before considering we could have easily beaten Villa and United at home late on. We’ve had 2-3 bad performances and every other game we’ve competed for all or most like an established Premier League team with a lot of players that other clubs at this level simply wouldn’t sign but have fully earned their chance. Considering the injuries the above is even more likely to have been a bit better with even average injuries and heading into a window it looks really bright. Great support today. Brilliant scenes for the second. [Post edited 5 Jan 20:38]

This is it. We are where we deserve to be. If we get relegated, it will be because we weren't good enough. If we stay up, it will be because we deserved it.

We scored with the last kicks of the game against Wolves and Southampton. We've done a bit of robbing too.

Agree, and I’d say currently, we deserve to stay up.

If it wasn't for everyone's most hated goalkeeper we may well have lost at Brighton as well. Basically any team that falls just short of survival/promotion/playoffs etc. can always say they should have won this game or not lost that one etc. Bit pointless trying to assert we should be on x points instead.

We were absolutely pummelled for the most part at Brighton.

January transfer window is going to be very interesting, fortunately we do appear to have found the answer defensively (bar giving a way penalties). Therefore id probably be happy to stick with what we have, unless a decent lb comes available as a backup/competition for Leif. I wouldn't mind another larger attacking player to help Delap out a little, we look a little lightweight at the top end of the pitch. The Arsenal game it really showed as their two CBS took Delap out of the game.

Agree with getting another attacker, Delap can't do it all on his own.
We are so close on 08:21 - Jan 6 with 1353 views | StokieBlue | I think this from SB in the Guardian is interesting. I knew we had injuries but didn't know it was up there with the most in the league: "Ipswich continue to top the Premier League’s injury table and it gets no easier now Omari Hutchinson, their dazzlingly talented forward, is out for a few weeks with a groin injury. They have struggled all season to keep players available and it threatens to derail a team that has rarely looked out of its depth. Kieran McKenna’s achievement in giving them a serious shout of escaping trouble, currently only shy of safety on goal difference, should be lauded. The manager never complains despite competing this season with a squad containing many of the stalwarts who took them all the way from League One. They deserved their latest building block, a draw at Fulham, and look well placed to improve between now and May. Their progress is a triumph of coaching: McKenna has worked wonders and Ipswich can reach fresh heights if their treatment room starts to empty soon." SB

I think the point is that we are close - we're in the area where with a little more luck we could easily be lower mid-table. Not that we should be - we are where we are as a sum of everything - but it's confidence-building to know that our squad led by our manager is not (as it very well could have been) a basket-case like Southampton. None of us knew at the start of the season, or even half a dozen games in when the adrenaline was carrying us through until we ran out of steam in games, that we could settle down and compete and put ourselves in with a chance of survival. We know that now. That's what I think this post is about.

Exactly that. We could also not have scored at Southampton and Wolves and been worse off. But we've had more last minute goals that cost us points than won us points. More injuries than everyone else except Brighton. More refereeing decisions wrongly against than for. So we aren't whipping boys. We aren't making up the numbers. We are a bit of luck, a moment more of concentration or a ref decision or two away from being in the middle of this division or at least have a nice bit of breathing space from the drop zone. We might be where we are on merit. We might go down. But we are very, very close to being a very solid Premier League team that's not in immediate danger of going down, which is an incredible place to be at this stage.
