He had a great game v Villa, but I thought the save was way over rated.

It's such a strange save that it's quite hard to judge it. It might be a bit flukey or weird or it might be one of the greatest saves of all time.

I genuinely believe if a 'famous' GK had done that we'd be watching it forever.

I have to disagree.

Seeing it in person from the angle I did, I thought at the time it was astonishing because the ball was behind him, and he somehow managed to claw the ball over the net in a way I have never seen a goalkeeper do before.

Seeing it on video only confirms my view.

But it was probably too unorthodox to feature in a save of the month competition.

It looked like a fairly simple save to his left, but the unorthodox way he threw his arm at it made it look a bit more 'spectacular'.

Watching that link, I really dont see a sensational save. If anything, he made it more complicated than it needed to be.

Happy to agree to differ.

He made a simple save look difficult. Coincidentally I used the word unorthodox further down in the thread, so at least we are agreed on that! ha.

What made him do that (and makes it a very good save) is that he had gone down expecting the shot instead of the pull back and he is only just getting up again to make the save.

An element of luck, but there often is with goalkeeping.

A brilliant instinctive reaction, incredible to direct it away from goal somehow. The reactions on the Villa fan videos say a lot!

If ever there was an example of football people underestimating and misunderstanding goalkeeping, calling that "simple" is it.

The ball hits multiple players, balloons up in a very unexpected way (compared to, say, how they practice those quick transitions in training)... and just watch it and consider how little time he has to react after seeing the ball..!

He doesn't really 'make' anything, because it's pure instinct. You could hold that against including it in the save of the month maybe, but that's a different conversation.

A "fairly simple save"?!?!? What planet are you from?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

There are some stunning saves in that shortlist, so it doesn’t seem too unreasonable. It’s obviously subjective anyway.

Yep, personally the saves on the shortlist have more technique than Palmers (which was still a great reaction stop).

AP's was a top save, but at this level there are many of those.

More importantly, seems a major upgrade on Muric.
