In a world where news is very carefully managed, are these pieces indicated to signal that we have every intention of holding onto O'Shea, and notice of a succession plan with Morsy? I may well be reading too much into this, but you would think that the club is now planning for the Championship next season now, and moving the wheels into motion for the next phase of the 'project'. The timing feels like more than coincidence to me.

For the avoidance of doubt this is pure speculation, and opinion on my part

FWIW he’s been my favourite signing this season. A really strong athletic defender. Sometimes I think he gets away with holding too much in the box, but he’s clearly smart with it as isn’t getting pulled up.

We’ll be good again... one day

I suspect it's the other way round - boosting the value of a saleable asset.

Both. Encouraging him to stay with a pathway to captaincy and saying to other clubs that he's at least £20m if you want him.

Nothing so clinical as that. An Irish reporter was at the presser and asked a few questions about him for his piece on Sunday, so we said we'd hold off on using those lines until after he'd used them.

He's about to be relegated for the 3rd time so unless he's after Herman H's record suggest he stays here next season if he can't get a move to a well established PL club.

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Our only home win in a year.

I think he's the one player that probably *needs* to go back into the PL next season for international matters.

His CB spot in the Ireland squad will be under threat if he plays in the Champ and it's clear he values playing for his country.

That being said, I know he feels like he's at the biggest club of his career to date. Unfortunately, although the likes of Brentford may not be bigger than us in many ways, they can offer PL stability unlike us.

Not sure that's a concern - he (and others in our squad) had no problems getting in the Irish team last season.

He was on the bench in the last Ireland game, with Brentford and Everton defenders favoured over him.

He plays right-back for Ireland, so it was Matt Doherty who came in for him, I think.

It will be less about money, and more about release clause and player desire I suspect.

Local press seem pretty classy. Nice touch that.
