That Mick McNeil story has me reminiscing 19:56 - Oct 23 with 4040 viewsDubtractor

Though not about his playing days, but his sport shop in Ipswich.

Bought so many pairs of football boots there back in the 80s and 90s, it was a bit of an institution to a lot of the local players I knew at the time. Alas, one of the pairs of boots were Quasar (briefly promoted by Gary Linekar) and they were terrible.

I remember buying my first pair of boots there as a c. 8 yr old. It was a bit of a rite of passage for any kid growing up in Ipswich in the late 70s and 80s (and obviously the 90s to by the sounds of it, but I’d moved on to off licences by then lol). It was a right little Aladdin’s cave if I remember correctly.

I think it's been a Sally Army shop for a good ten years or more now.

It was like Disneyland for a young kid mad about sport. I don’t think I ever knew who he was though.

Which are barely sports shops at all. I’ve no idea how places like JD Sports make money. They have massive shops containing hardly any customers. Maybe the mark ups on slave labour made ‘fashion’ tatt are really high?

If I remember correctly, McNeil's had an extensive range of Subbuteo teams. Definitely recall getting Brazil, West Ham and Hibernian. Works of art.

Olympus as well, although they were a national chain.

All those you mentioned would be where I’d trawl round with my Mum for a new pair of trainers and when I was old enough to go in town with mates, we’d go in the same places.

Mintz & Davies and Fosters were where’s we’d go for our fashion input!

In the late 90s / early 2000s at the entrance to the Buttermarket on the right (opposite the now empty Superdry unit), there was a shop called Club (Klub?) which sold some designer gear as well.

Edit; also Everybody’s Hobbies for subbuteo teams and Hornby 00 trains and accessories.

I got the air soft guns, Had a colt classic from There.. think the other place was Felixstowe road, I think it was galaxy models..

Crazy to think kids running round with replica dessert eagle hand Guns, and Remington pump action shot guns etc ..😅

Loved Everybodies Hobbies. Used to spend ages looking around there at the airfix kits and N gauge railway stuff.

Can’t really blame the council for the explosive rise of online shopping which has killed or at least strangled most of traditional retail. Even if councils made all car parks in town free, would that have changed anything?

Probably not for provincial towns like Ipswich. Places like York, Cambridge etc still have thriving town centres but they are heavily dependent on tourists and would be deserted if not for them.

Internet shopping has killed off the traditional nature of town centres and so councils need to bring in non-retail businesses to fill the void - offer people experiences that they can’t find online.

People always say that but what exactly is it that would bring people to a town center that’s not shopping? Bars and restaurants up to a point but they are struggling, too. And if you’re a family of four likely much easier (parking) and nicer (no piss-stained streets) to go to an out of town pub for lunch.
