TBH doesn't come across well. Also talks about stamping on a goalkeepers face on purpose because he wasn't happy he started on the bench (not while at ipswich)

Sounds like there was quite a lot Waghorn didn’t understand. A lot of the players were pretty hopeless but as has pointed out, some were most certainly not. Mind you, Hurst was beyond out of his depth, but if there is any truth in this, that’s poor by Waghorn. He was decent for us with a 1 in 2/3 scoring record, but let’s face it, his record spells journeyman and I can’t see him making the hall of fame any time soon.

But they needed McKenna’s arrival and the revamp of the squad after the takeover to really start being effective though. Donacien was as much all at sea as everyone else was under Hurst, but was helped by being out on loan when things got really depressing in League One. As for Jackson, I don’t think anyone would have objected had Cook bombed him out too, as he really hadn’t shown enough in his time here. What it does show is that the squad was horribly divided going in to 2018/19. I have sympathy both ways to be honest. Those already here worrying that the team was being weakened, and those arriving being unsupported especially given Hurst’s divide and rule strategy with his recruitment. No, not correct. Waghorn moved towards the end of the summer after Hurst had made most of his signings. It was Adam Webster that was sold to generate the funds for Hurst’s spending spree. Clearly Hurst and Deputy Doig were told there was no money available for signings, but a proportion of any sales would be made available to strengthen the squad. [Post edited 28 Nov 2025 10:02]

Not checked but I’m 99% sure that Nolan & Nsiala come in after Waghorn left.

| Waghorn under the cosh on 10:09 - Nov 28 with 2303 views | gordon | Hurst was so funny, though. It was genuinely like he felt insecure and threatened by anyone who had achieved anything even remotely impressive in football so wanted to get rid of them ASAP and fill the squad with lower league journeymen. | | | |

I'm not sure whether it was insecurity, or whether he just felt that was he could deepen the squad by selling a few, and buying 'gems' from the lower leagues. Clearly didn't work, but that seemed to be the plan. Its the sort of thing I would have done on Championship Manager back in the day!! :-)

Is it a poor attitude ? Football clubs are businesses. The direction the business was going didn’t suit his career goals. He has said it quite candidly but I’d be the same if my work place hired a team of incompetent personnel.

There were others though. Ellis Harrison & Jordan Roberts were 2 who raised a lot of eyebrows, after they joined in training a few of those still here were wondering if they had won a competition. Both joined before Waghorn left.

I’m pretty sure that Hurst knew exactly what was wrong with the club and that he wasn’t prepared to go with it in the way that Mick was. The trouble is that he had a poor eye for player potential and was too impatient with the established players who were at the club - and didn’t really help him out.

Yeah. I remember going to a preseason game before that season, I think Barnet, where Waggy was there but just on the bench. The Derby offer was hanging over us all summer - we knew he was going to go. It really destabilised us imo going into the season. We just lost all the goals in the team. Evans left it late to extract maximum value I suppose but just harmed us really. I think I remember first seeing Ellis Harrison against MK Dons in preseason too and liking his movement for us but again it didn't work out that way did it. The writing was on the wall when Chambo did that interview after Exeter cup game. I was desperate for Hurst to succeed. Not so fun times!

Those two may well have done to be fair. But the initial spending spree was funded by Adam Webster's sale.
