This has to be the most stressful of the 3 KM promotion races 07:15 - Apr 19 with 1145 viewsBlue_Heath

I recall being stressed at points during the last two and really thought we'd blown both seasons at points but somehow we came through.

We really need a Sarmiento moment today but unfortunately and ironically he plays for Boro.

Having 3 rivals to contend with is making the job much harder and we have the worst fixture run and crazy amount of games in a short space of time.

That said I'd love a day out at Wembley but if we come 3rd/4th/5th can we pick ourselves up for the 2 games? annoyingly Wrexham now back in the mix for 6th assuming we get 3rd . Ideally it would be Hull then Millwall in final if it were to happen this way.

Football always has stressed me out!

Would love to see us at the new Wembley having done so at the old one.

I always remind myself of the Arrigo Sacchi quote that “football is the most important of the least important things”.

I still get nervous, frustrated, delirious and angry at games, plus every emotion in between these all, but what I don’t do is stress with what if thoughts as it really doesn’t matter and I can do nothing about it directly.

Not always been like that, made a conscious effort to change my mindset in May 1999 after the playoff defeat to Bolton; had to work on the 19th so missed the 4-3 and was so anxious at work it was ridiculous.

I think a factor that is psychologically interesting (for me at least), is that in the previous promotions by this time in the season we were consistently playing our best. I felt each game we were seeing the best of what the team could do and therefore whatever would happen would happen. Draws like the Hull game felt we were still squeezing out whatever we could.

This season and still I always feel we have another gear but rarely manage to find it consistently which makes things all a bit more frustrating.
Today we need top gear please.

Nervous as a kitten sitting here right now , but as soon as I’m in my seat later the nerves disappear, in my eyes this result is so important today as it will affect the mindset of the teams around us .
Win and we put the pressure back on them Imo.

I have had no expectations of this season...so consequently not stressed or anxious about things.

Alternatively, get a grip of yourself.

Even if we lose today, I’d rather be in our position than Soton or Millwall or Boro.

I think we will win today which will take a lot of the pressure off.

You make a great point, this team hasn't been a joy to watch like the last promo side and rarely play to the top of their game. I also don't have the trust in this squad that they can come back from losing a goal and don't feel we actually know what our best team is. Also some players flogged to death like Matusiwa and others rarely play e.g. Johnson.

I agree we really need to up it today and make a statement win although right now I'd settle for 3 points any way they come.

I hadn't heard that before, more balanced than the quote from Bill Shankly.

Nice quote. Bill Shankley disagrees. "Some people think football is a matter of life and death, but I can assure you it is much more serious than that"

Kind of will be glad when it is all done and dusted, which ever way it goes. It is the cricket season now, you know. Hopefully this is our penultimate home game this season and we know what that means.

I don't think it's anymore stressful at all. Thinks that's recency bias.

The difference this time is despite it being stressful and nerve destroying, last time we were just completely proud of what the boys were doing and had done. We were desperate for them to get it over the line because it was incredible.

This time everyone expects it and anything else is a failure (which is actually a bit unfair in the context of all the change). We're almost getting annoyed with the team because Southampton are coming strong.

I think we probably all hope stylistically we would be a bit more cut and thrust and dominant which hasn't really happened. But if we can win today or if we can get over the line the reality is it will have been a really good effort as it was never going to be easy.

People seem to have forgotten that is run in last time we lost limply at Norwich and drew at home with midtable Watford and Boro in what were slightly underwhelming performances. Coventry away wasn't a classic performance either, squeaked over the line with a scruffy set piece goal. League 1 was a victory parade but that's not the norm.

We are currently in far more control than last time in this division. We can afford to lose today and still have it in our own hands (not that we want that at all).

I think those who are finding it more stressful must be doing so due to the pressure of expectation. Last time we were a team promoted from League 1 who few expected to get automatic promotion (many hoped but few expected). This time we are a team relegated from the Prem in a season where Leicester haven't been a contender and Southampton weren't until recently. That has made many think we should be automatically promoted and so it seems to have increased the pressure in their minds.

I can understand the difference in expectations but, to me, we are in a great position - at least as good as we were with 5 to play last time around https://www.twtd.co.uk/league- albeit that Leicester were in the mix whereas Coventry aren't this time. It is interesting it was Southampton with a late charge causing a lot of fear then as well.

I think we will draw which will be fine. A win would be great, though.

As you say, even a defeat isn't season-destroying but two on the bounce wouldn't be great.

Strangely I’m always a lot more relaxed with just a few games to go then with ten or fifteen.

I think the difference with two years ago is how we all feel at the end of each game. 23/24 was full of utter joyous moments which released the stress - Rotherham, Bristol, Southampton and Coventry at the head of that. This time all I normally feel is relief that we have got the game over the line (e.g. birmingham), or when we have a routine win that it is "just one more ticked off" (e,g. swansea).

What we need is not another Sarmiento moment, but instead for one of our early chances (there usually are one or two) to end up in the net. Then to get comfortable and be two up by early in the second half, Walton keeping another of his clean sheets (8 out of 15 at PR in the League this season, 53%).

That is largely psychological, tho.

In 2022-23-24 we were all still amazed at our progress and astounded every time we pulled out another result. It was all fresh, new and unexpected (based on the preceding couple of decades) - exciting.

Now many are jaded after a season of largely being squashed and battered in the Prem, with transfer spending figures having taken away the joyful sense of an upstart band of brothers punching way above their weight. McKenna is no longer striving for a miracle, but for the mere expected. There is a dull realisation that money does not so easily buy success, that the clock is ticking on parachute payments, fear of big names likely to get relegated. The lurking spectre of 22 years in the wilderness after our previous Prem excursion.

Faragegate has dimmed my emotional involvement for the remainder of this season, but even if it hadn’t happened, I’d still feel quite sanguine about this promotion battle, because at least we all have the happy memories of the double promotion. Both of those were far more anxiety-inducing because they felt like mirages after so many seasons of mediocrity and failure.
