Who has the best squad - Saints or Town? 11:26 - Apr 28 with 1475 viewsringwoodblue

Trying not to be bias but I think we have a better squad on paper but Saints have a better performing squad of players.

There are a few too many Town players that just aren’t delivering on the pitch for one reason or another.

Saints have quite a few emerging young players like Bragg and Yander but we are really lacking in this department as none of our academy players get anyway near the matchday squad.

I'd say Southampton by a decent distance as they seem to have better depth in the areas that really matter like CF and in the heart of the midfield

Also, them being a top Cat 1 academy for a couple of decades helps as well massively both in getting fees for young players and having those close to the first team being better

I think it's marginal but you'd have to say them.

They've undoubtedly recruited better than us this year but they were working from a stronger base. You have to remember they have spent most of the last ten years in the Premier League.

They signed bit part players, Ross Stewart and Cameron Archer for 25M+. They've also had a brilliantly successful youth system as mentioned.

I don't think there's a lot in it. I reckon if you combine the line ups both squads are pretty evenly represented. IIRC our last recent 5 meetings vs. Saints have only had 1 goal in either direction at most, which probably tells a story. There was nothing in the game at PR, or the 2 last season, or the promotion season for that matter despite us wining both of them. Its small margins.

Azaz is a better 10 than we've got, and Fellows would be starting in our team. I like Scienza but Philogene and Clarke are options not to be sniffed at.

CM I don't think there's loads in it, if Jander, Downes and Charles trumps Matusiwa, Taylor, Neil then its pretty close.

Harwood-Bellis is a good player, but so is O'Shea. I've always liked Manning but I think its hard to argue he's better than Davis.

They have the best coach/manager in the here and now, both v talented and young.

Both squads similar in talent and cost, but there’s had better balance. We obviously lack a striker; ours had 5 goals all season.

Not much in it.., clearly they’re (as mentioned by a few managers in the league) the best team in this division…, shame for them they had such a poor start, but it’s a 46 game season.

Does any of that mean they’ll win tonight. No. 1-3 .., we like these games, can’t switch off, need to be at it, one off game.

We’re mid table away for a reason, we’re not great away, but I’d back us with our quality in any one off game at this level, home or away.

Yes I forgot to mention in my initial post about our lack of quality upfront compared to theirs. Stewart has been out injured but him and Larin look much more potent goalscorers than Hirst and Azon. I’m not even going to mention Akpom as he feels like he’s contributed nothing.

Its about the better "team"... an Id say we haven't had a very effective "team" since the dbl winning side was disbanded and replaced with much more expensive players ( the fee is clearly not the players fault ) But Id argue they're collectively not a patch on the dbl winning team.

Doesn't really matter at the moment it's about who performs on the night. We have players like Azon, Hirst, Clarke,Memeti and Nunez. All capable of producing the goods. But as we have seen all season a lack of really good performances back to back and some like Nunez and Memeti in particular have now had four pretty unimpressive games on the trot.
We all know the situation surrounding Azon. He holds the ball up better than Hirst and is better in the air. But Azon in particular doesn't score enough and Hirst has been far from prolific. The type of player I would like to see is a David Johnson (Jonty) brought in. I think if you have a big centre forward you need someone to run in behind and pick up the flick on's. We currently tend to rely on that front man backing into defenders and waiting to bring players into the game. But quite often he's a lone ranger with players tracking back and being nowhere near him.
So whether they are better than us matters not it's all about one win.

in essence its about who deals with their nerves the better and dampen that adrenaline....we have looked decidedly jittery of late.

Southampton. The can interchange their strikers and central midfield with no drop off.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

The experience, structure and money from 10 years in the PL should put them way ahead of us. But the reality is, it's marginal.

So rather than a stick to beat us with, we've done brilliantly within 3 seasons to even be competing with them.

I think we'll end up with a narrow defeat tonight, but in the end it won't matter for this season's promotion.

Our U21s are 1 place and 2 points better off than theirs in the PL2 too.

We're pretty evenly matched across the board currently.

We've got a lot of incredibly talented players, but so many of them blow incredibly hot and cold

Mehmeti and Nunez, both in one of our most important positions have imo been a bit of a problem in the past block of games, the talent is there, but for some reason their individual performances haven't imo matched that talent

Similar with Clarke, he'll come on as a finisher, play well and you think ok he needs a start, gets it, then you think nah, wish we had jayden out there, but then jayden goes out and starts and you're thinking bger maybe clarke should have done.

I don't think any of our forward players have actually made a position there own.

I know it’s not popular, but yes I agree, particularly regarding the strikers. If we are honest ours are average championship strikers at best.
