I guess if we are abandoning McKenna ball tactics, a keeper who is suspect with the ball at this feet makes more sense

Edit - apparently I didn't read closely enough, but Pope coming here was being reported a few weeks ago wasn't it?

A more pragmatic approach this year feels sensible - in the championship it works well but with higher quality presses and (comparatively) lower quality defenders, a more direct approach while we get established in the premier league makes sense.

We can buy a keeper who is good with his feet once we have a defence that is skilful enough to beat the press.

Was my thoughts, if were going counter attack a keeper with pl exp and shot stopping would for me take prioity pver ball control.

Doubt that’s the case, unless GO wants him of source. Injury issues as well hasn’t he?

There is definitely a deal in place for Pope - dependent on O'Neil's approval now.

That’s correct. All sorted if O Neil is happy. Pope being a Town fan is very keen.

I was told about it at the end of April, seems like it's almost done.

For a more pragmatic team, less ball reliant for a keeper, which I think is smart play, he ticks all the boxes.

Minimal fee, proven, incredible shot stopper, big yes from me.

I like how ÂŁ5m of your British Pound Sterling is a minimal fee these days!

Unfortunately it is these day, such is ludicrous fees that are splashed around in the market.

There's definately some logic to that.
One of the criticisms of us during our previous Premier League season was that we were often trying to play through presses that were simply BETTER than anything we'd faced before. That's fine when you've got defenders and a keeper who are comfortable under pressure, but if the quality isnt quite there then you can end up creating your own problems.
That said, I don't think it has to be a choice between full-on route one football and playing out from the back. The best sides are FLEXIBLE. Sometimes you play through it, sometimes you go over it. The problem comes when you're determined to do the same thing regardless of what the opposition are giving you.
I also think people sometimes underestimate how much pressure a defence comes under when the rest of the team isnt functioning properly. A better organised midfield and a more compact shape can make average defenders look alot better than they actually are. Thats something that often gets overlooked when people focus purely on individual players.
As for the keeper, I'd probably agree to a point. If you're rebuilding several areas of the side then there is an argument for prioritising physicality, organisation and defensive solidity first. Once you're more established, then you can start becoming more selective about specialist attributes. Not saying technical ability doesnt matter , because obviously it does, but theres only so much you can fix in one window.
The one thing I'd be careful of is assuming technical ability only matters once the defence improves. Modern football is moving the other way. More and more teams use the goalkeeper as an extra outfield player, so ideally you want BOTH. Easier said than done of course when you're working within Premier League budgets and trying to improve multiple positions at once.
I do think a slightly more PRAGMATIC approach makes sense initially though. Survive first, establish yourself, then start worrying about whether every player can beat a press and ping 40-yard passes. Sometimes clubs try to run before they can walk and it ends up costing them. Maybe thats boring to some people but I'd rather stay up playing slightly more direct football than go down trying to prove a point.
