Summer of 76 07:45 - Jun 23 with 1524 viewsStokieBlue

This is a good article that highlights the differences in the summers we are seeing now and the famous one of 76 which is often cited on here as an argument against climate change:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk

Some points:

"The heatwave, which began 50 years ago on Tuesday, brought 15 consecutive days where the peak temperature was above 32C. Half a century later and 32C no longer feels shocking."

"While the 1976 heatwave was an extraordinary weather event, it took place in a much cooler world. In the past 50 years, average global temperatures have risen by about 1C. But for southern England, this number is between 3C and 4C."

"Greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels, means British summers have already become hotter. Our new research shows that a comparable event to 1976 would be 3 degrees hotter today"

"While ingrained in national memory, 1976 is the sixth warmest summer on record, with the summer of 2025 topping the rankings – for now.”

"The Met Office has issued a new projection of what a heatwave like that of the 1976 summer could look like in the 2050s. Under this modelling, the UK could see a 14-day heatwave event with temperatures of over 40C for nine consecutive days. Temperatures could peak at 45C in England, 38C in Scotland, 41C in Wales and 30C in Northern Ireland."

I was at am event yesterday in London where a certain former Senator John Kerry (remember him?) said the only reason we have any media uncertainty about climate change is due to high profile politicians talking bollox.

It's certainly one conclusion you could draw from the data.

The best summer ever !

Doesn't sound like the best summer ever to me:

"Harvests failed, farmers despaired, Britain imported an extra million tonnes of grain, food prices rose by 12%, taps ran dry, and each day, 250 people died from heat-related deaths."

Unfortunately those type of events are only going to get worse with the climate change we are seeing.

As a twelve year old boy on six weeks school holiday I was completely unaware of any of what you have highlighted at the time.

I wasn't alive but I am able to read facts in an article and raise them for consideration against the opinion raised.

You carry on stomping around forum like that 12 year old boy though.

Deary me.

I’m merely pointing out that to a lot of people who grew up during the Summer of 76 it was fantastic. Which is why people look back in it so fondly.

During the big snowstorms of 2010, whilst I was pulling my hair out because I had to close my business for three days my kids were having the time of their lives sledging, throwing snowballs and building snowmen. They were blissfully unaware of their dad having sleepless nights or people unable to get to work, old people unable to afford to heat their homes etc.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Not to mention there was no 24 hour news channels in ‘76 telling everyone how rubbish everything was, so people could form their own opinions.

So your view based on 50 years of historic articles is a more valued opinion than someone who lived through it and offered their view from memories as a 12 year old at the time?

I don’t believe GB was challenging anything you wrote just offering his lived experience as a child at that time.

As the impact of global warming on our climate become visible to all but the most partisan, I’m saddened that we still get continued net-zero pushback.

Drilling the North Sea, delaying energy transition …

We’ve done the easy bits, it is just going to get harder and more expensive from here. As a species we seem incapable of making almost any sacrifice to help out our children and grandchildren

Hard to tell what he means nowadays, virtually everything has some other underlying meaning or historic dig at another poster.

Benters is of course entitled to remember it fondly but it can also be highlighted that it caused issues. It's also right to push back when he constantly uses it as an example to deny climate change.

Going to leave it there.

Fair point, I misread that. Point still stands around being able to provide modern context on the issues that it caused.

Benters offered his views on this thread and given how he's referenced that summer historically with regards to climate change why can't he be mentioned?

Are you telling people what they can and can't post again?

I'll leave it there because it's obvious how you're trying to steer this thread.
