Rooney reckons Haaland didn't foul Anderson for the disallowed goal! 07:57 - Jul 12 with 1703 viewsNthQldITFC

Good player, but an utterly useless pundit.

Anyone with half a brain can see Haaland transfer his considerable weight forward through his hips before the pushing through his arms, but according to Wayne he just 'brushed him off'. Newton would concur with me too, unless someone in the crowd yanked Anderson back with an invisible rope.

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!

I think he tries to be controversial with some of his punditry but fails. I don’t find him particularly insightful about any aspects of the game.

I think he’s said so many bizarre things at this point, he’s going left field to be an outlier and restore credibility. Should he ever actually be right again (seems unlikely).

Awful pundit as you say. Sometimes the consensus is right.

I dont think he was trying to be controversial on that one, I think he was applying Premier League style rules to it, as Im not convinced that would have been given in most Premier league games.

in anycase the foul didnt disallow the goal, the "foul" "disallowed" the corner kick from being taken, which is why they got to retake it, and we didnt get a free kick from it.

Here's an example from the build up to the Ghana match that you might have missed.

If you thought that was bad, they were discussing Jude Bellingham and the conversation went like this:-

Micah Richards: I just want to ask you one question. What's it like being the golden boy? Obviously he's got the weight of the nation on his shoulders at times, the player that he is. You've been that person and how do you deal with that?

Wayne Rooney: Ehhhm, I think it's a little bit different but it's similar in the same way, you know..........

When push comes to shove, it was a foul.

Falls firmly in the bracket of 'giving the referee a decision to make'. Anywhere else on the pitch and its a foul, he has both hands on Anderson and extends his arms in a pushing motion. Given the amount of grappling and jostling in the box these days it might look soft because they aren't always given, but I think its very hard by the letter of the law to argue that's not a foul on occasions they are flagged.

I can't remember what game it was but him and Ellen White were having an "Ermmmmm...." off with each other.

They seem to persist with these pundits even if they're not very good.

It's clearly a push, i'm not sure how anyone could not see it that way.

I thought it was soft. Corners are rubbish. It's a coin toss whether after feeling contact, a player will decide to push back or make their legs collapse under them, and if the latter whether the ref will care. Pickford was awesome against Mexico, but was like a bumbling dwarf against Norway. We were lucky after he needlessly conceded the first of that series of corners.

Looked like a good old shove to me. Not soft.

The acceptance there seems to be now that pushing and shoving in the box is just a thing seems odd to me.

Hirst's penalty against Boro was deemed very soft because there's always pushing and shoving in the box. Well, there shouldn't be! Call them as fouls every time and they'll soon stop.

I thought it was probably a foul, yeah. I don't really see any legitimate reason why you're pushing people with your hands fully on the chest/back, so I've no real sympathy if the player you're pushing falls over from the force applied!

The BBC have clearly paid him a tonne of money before they realised what they had bought - the adverts for the podcast that keep coming at you are excruciating, and they seem to be shoe-horning him into every available slot. It is to be hoped that some commissioning bod is about to feel the full wrath of the new DG for the frittering away of public funds

However, maybe we are in the minority. Maybe TWTD is the only forum that seems to hold this unanimous view on him, and there are millions of folk out there that actually appreciate Rooney's insights - or indeed those of Matterface, Dixon, Giroud, etc who also seem to draw universally negative reviews.

But it seems unlikely

I actually really like Rooney. He’s actually got a really funny side I never knew. He’s like a cheeky kid at times. I find him Very likeable. The Pochettino suit stuff was quite funny. He’s definitely best when applying his experiences. When he does that he’s genuinely interesting.

The issue he has is the same as a lot of ex pundits - they have all this knowledge and these stories but just not quite the ability to express themselves so they get stuck in cliche a lot.

Very good player, not a very good pundit.

Yesterday I saw Rooney banging on about England exploiting Messi's defensive deficiencies.

There's no deficiency there, he just doesn't defend. And never has done.

Funny enough, it hasn't held him or Argentina back that much.

Not exactly a tactical insight from the BBC.

I said to someone the other day, I've watched every major football tournament since 1982 and this is the first one I've thought ITV have done it better.
