| How do we manage to get it so wrong with goalkeepers? 09:34 - Sep 7 with 4129 views | Backtoblue78A | Walton played almost 40 games last season, looking largely solid and had a good understanding with his defenders. We now revert to a strategically poor replacement who doesn't instill any sense of confidence. | | | | |

Scherpen has faced the second most (21) shots on target, saving the third most (13). His save % of 61.9 is 11th overall. Absolutely at fault for the second against Liverpool - not sure why he was in no man's land. Unsaveable free-kick against Sunderland - others at much more fault in Utd game not to mention the handball. If we need to point fingers at why we've been porous, Dara at RB and Greaves' overall performances are higher on the list of things to fix.

100% this.... Fed up with reading about how terrible he is etc etc based on three games two of which were against 2 of the big 6. He came with a good pedigree and yes he's made few mistakes but so have the defence. Maybe we get behind him and perhaps try and help him get his confidence up with his new team??

He was at fault for both goals on Friday. Isak's first goal went straight through him! He seems to stay rooted to his line when the defence is actually under pressure and then races out of his goal when he doesn't really need to (i.e the second goal). More worryingly I've never seen someone look so uncomfortable with the ball at their feet. Hopefully it's just a shaky start and he'll be fine but you'd be silly to just blindly back him and not feel slightly concerned based on what we've seen so far.

Walton and Hladky were both wretched in their first game, Alex Palmer had an absolute stormer, which of the three did best for us in the end? Our previous goalkeeper was basically chased out of here with pitchforks and looks a million dollars for his new club. It would be lovely if we gave the next one an environment to thrive in.

You support Ipswich Town, he plays for Ipswich Town. Every single player should be blindly backed every time they step onto the pitch! That is our only job as fans. [Post edited 7 Sep 9:56]

However, we are only 3 games in, far too early to be judging him imo. He has also pulled off some decent saves to fwiw, I certainly have more faith in him than Muric, who always seemed like a rabbit in headlights.

It's utter nonsense to suggest he shouldn't be making any particular save because it's against Liverpool or United! His positioning and biscuit-wrists remain the same, whether we're playing against Liverpool or the Dog and Duck.

| How do we manage to get it so wrong with goalkeepers? on 09:53 - Sep 7 with 2406 views | Bluemike31 | This absolutely does my head in, look at the damn saves he has made, never mind the odd error while bedding into a new team, Five saves alone against Man Utd, score could have been Ten !!! Keepers will always be exposed to blame when they make a mistake, what about every other outfield player making numerous ones throughout every game, I mean we all love Enciso and rightly so, but the One on One at Old Trafford should be scored, no question, big mistake, nothing said. Just give Scherpen a break for crying out loud, and a bit of time to get settled in behind a completely new defence. | | | |

How do some of our fans get is sooooo wrong and hound players 3 games in and rather than support and help them develop and grow, knock the stuffing out of them with their constant negativity?? ALL keepers make mistakes, even the very best, yet our fans prefer to over analyse every move our new keeper makes in a bid to find fault?

Saw a world class keeper get beat at near post yesterday too. Look, he's not been great and there's something about him not really instilling confidence, but Muric ended up getting plenty of praise after he left us. I think he'll be fine, let's just give that back four a little more time. Not 100% on him myself, but happy to be patient and not jump on the blame game too soon.
| How do we manage to get it so wrong with goalkeepers? on 10:00 - Sep 7 with 2338 views | Scuzzer | Agree with the Walton aspect of your comment. But to criticise Scherpen like that after less than a handful of games is a bit weak. If the defence done their jobs then he would not had been put into those positions in the first place. Give him time...infact give them all time...yes that hated word around here 'gel'. | |

Christian Walton had an atrocious start for us and over the years he's conceded dozens of goals for us via parrying the ball badly or just not having the agility to get to saveable shots. The last time we were in the Premier League, Walts basically let in every other shot he faced. He had almost the worst save percentage in the league. We gave him support and he cracked on and had an excellent season last year. Funny how that works.

100%. This is what makes the goalkeeper conversation so frustrating. The guy on the bench somehow would've saved all of them, even though they wouldn't. Just a reminder that we brought a keeper in, instead of trying Walton last time in the Prem. He played a few games and we looked for another keeper, and we've got promoted and done it again. Clearly the club (and multiple managers) don't think he's a PL no.1. Scherpen made a howler for the first one, was caught out in the second(that will be fixed over time, building familiarity with the defence) but he also saved a few shots that had an xG of over 1, so as ever, swings and roundabouts.

Yes, plus Utd's fifth. Off his line, didn't get there and was lobbed. We had these exact same conversations with Muric. Statistically the worst keeper in Prem, nearly single-handedly relegated us. By the time he was dropped, we were already in relegation spots and it was as good as too late. Palmer has his flaws, yet was miles better than Muric that season. I don't buy this "fans fault for being on his back". They're supposed to be professional sportsmen. If they wilt under criticism, then it's still their fault. Fresh starts at new clubs can bring about a change in form. Muric' better form in Italy not necessarily due to us hounding him. Maybe he just got his head down and became more focussed. While with us, Muric was in nightclub partying scandal while away on Kosovo duty. Could be that Muric was just a bit of a playboy dick in those days, and decided to sort himself out. With two off-his-line mistakes in two games, I worry that Scherpen will over-correct and be much more cautious from now on. Modern keepers act as pivots outside the box and intercept through balls. I can't see Scherpen being that keeper any time soon. Perhaps lack of acceleration (being 6ft 9") means he'll never be that keeper. We cannot have a goalkeeper who ships a goal a game **again** in the Premier League and expect to stay in it. Walton was statistically the second or fourth best keeper in the Champ last season, on goals prevented and save percentage respectively: https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/l https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/l Given our history of signing dodgy keepers, who almost single handedly relegate us in our last two Prem stints, you'd think we'd err on the side of caution and show some faith to one of the instrumental players who got us here this time. | How do we manage to get it so wrong with goalkeepers? on 10:21 - Sep 7 with 2104 views | baxterbasics | Players all over the pitch make any number of mistakes through the game. Some of which can lead to goals. When your defence allows so many shots through on goal, the 'keeper can't be expected to save everything. Scherpen is not the problem, and Walton probably isn't the solution. A better organised defence and a more cohesive defensive midfield might be.
