Hi all,

Have been looking at organising a big holiday to Dubai in November with a group of friends and their partners.

One of the party have said they'd rather look to go elsewhere with the unknown certainty around Iran and the US at the moment.

Any thoughts on whether we should just go elsewhere, or what we can do to persuade him we'd be fine?

There are many reasons not to go to Dubai, but the current sabre rattling doesn't change any of them. Safety isn't and won't be an issue, just your conscience.

To be honest without knowing your mate, it's hard to say, but I'd guess people with this opinion are going to be very difficult to persuade that it is ok there so may be a dead loss going down that approach.

This is the current advice and this bit jumps out at me:

There is a possibility of an increased threat against Western interests and the security situation could worsen with little warning. You should remain vigilant and keep up to date with the latest developments, including via the media and this travel advice.

I personally agree, however; he went to the extent in the pub at the weekend proving to us on Google Maps how close Dubai is to Iran and "likely war zones".

You're probably right in regards to the first paragraph, would be a shame for him to miss out however.

Hadn't seen that, so thank you for the link. - Do see his point of view where he doesn't want to go on a relaxing holiday and be on edge the entire time.

Hopefully, in the coming weeks (unlikely) but things may have settled down.

I was in Strait of Hormuz when the Iranians were looking for a British ship to borrow in retaliation for the boys in Gibraltar seizing one of theirs.

It really isn’t much of an issue. You’ll be fine in Dubai.

Blimey, I hope all is well your end.

That's the thoughts for the majority of the group, just a case of persuading my mate we would be absolutely fine.

Hang on, so instead of picking another destination you're ditching him?

I think the problem is there is a semblance of a point, and he is right to an extent but you wouldn't be able to pin him down on what he is expecting - you aren't going to be relaxing in the pool with air raid sirens blaring out!

Other places to look at would be Bali - or somewhere in South East Asia, but they are a lot further away - more expensive to get to but much cheaper when you are there

We haven't quite got to that stage yet, we wouldn't ditch him though.

You could go somewhere else that doesn't involve propping up one of the most despotic awful regimes on planet Earth, that has better food, and a nicer climate.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

That’s not a photo of Northumberland mate. But you’re right. Northumberland does have better food and a nicer climate. Decent campsites and plenty to do.

Spot on post that.

I'm a big admirer of Northumberland and it has some of the UKs best beaches but come on now.

Dubai is a vile place best avoided at the best of times for all manner of reasons.

But if you go beyond the likelihood that you are more likely to be struck by lightning than become a victim in the holy war - then being a western pleasure seeker conveniently close to Iran all boxed up on a plane??

It's not rocket science. But again that hand launched missile could equally be launched from a field near Stansted.

Go somewhere civilised with democracy and less slavery would be my suggestion. And you'd still be just as much at risk. Probably

I work for an offshoot of the FCO and I personally wouldn’t go there right now.

Too many unknowns and too much ‘noise’ to feel absolutely safe.

There’s nowhere I would rather be.

Kielder observatory is magnificent.
Outstanding beaches.
Some incredible pubs that do superb food.
There’s a Town fan that owns a shop in Haltwhistle who loves a chat.
We found a farm that has little annexes that you can book to stay at.
The area has some fascinating history.
Sycamore Gap is a brilliant walk.

Really can’t go wrong.

You’ve convinced me.

Dubai is tricky.
We'd never go for ethical reasons. LGBT and women's rights are just a couple.

Real world security should not be a worry. There is so much at stake for them they will have the place wired tight.

I was looking at Oman for Feb but Trump has just ruined that. Oman is on our list. A wonderfully rugged interior and if you read Ran Fiennes book on Heat you'll get a better insight.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.
