My first cycling trip in London: what I learnt 09:42 - Mar 23 with 2025 views | giant_stow | - It's ok to be overtaken by grannies and young kids on bikes - they've probably been cycling longer. - Traffic lights are for wimps - Walthamstow to Islington is more or less downhill (6.5 miles in 50 mins), whereas Islington to Walthamstow is uphill (7 miles in 1hr 25mins) - When cycling home uphill, its ok to be overtaken by fast walkers - Large main roads are sometimes less scary than narrow little roads, as there's more room for arsehole drivers to pass. - It's easier to check out pumpum when cycling - more time. - There won;t be a near-death experience on every trip. - After a long cycle-ride, be ready for your arse to feel utterly brutalised. Edit: one more: Cycling is lots of fun! [Post edited 23 Mar 2020 9:43]

I'd never noticed before! When you're driving hills are immaterial innit. Cheers mr.

What’s the difference between padded and bib shorts?

One stops stuff going down your front, the other stops things going up your back.

I realised the hill issue on the way, so tried another way back which I hoped would dodge a big hill. Not really worth it tbh. Turns out the hill is what Walthamstow sits on.

I've got them AND a padded seat (which slips over the existing one). Get both for extra cushioning!

So get a hi viz jacket and also look at those flashing lights. I noticed a cyclist coming towards me (hidden by shadows) way earlier than otherwise and the next day I bought one for the helmet. As for the lanes, I am a bit assertive, car coming my way I move into midlle and force his to slow down, before pulling over. Can p*ss people off, but far better to have them pass at a safe speed imho. Alternartive is you risk a broken elbow if they fly past and catch you. Takes some balls mind :-) And defo get out again within 48 hours if you can. It gets easier.

Cheers to You and others for the encouragement and advice. In these strange times and as a non-car owner, it's nice to have some wheels, so I will definately carry on!

That will work but won't provide relief by the way of padding. Cycling shorts are basically bunning shorts but with a big pad (chamois) between your legs and under your butt.
