Anyone else seen the military out and about? 15:11 - Mar 27 with 5490 views | StokieBlue | Just saw them here. Hung around for 10 minutes, had a look around then left. Am wondering if there will be enforced park closures at some point. SB

Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

Anyone else seen the military out and about? on 15:20 - Mar 27 with 3843 views | homer_123 | I have no doubt we'll see more stringent measures come in - or least those measures we have are enforced much more strongly. 20,000 additional troops were put on standby last week in readiness. We certainly don't have enough police to enforce current measures properly - regardless of how many are confirming.

You're getting cub scouts?! Pah, where we live, we're getting enforces from the local toddlers playgroups.

One barracks I know of has already been designated as a place to 'dispose of infected corpses' if the furnaces get over-run. If you do see squaddies out and about don't forget that unlike the civvy emergency services, they are banned from overtime and their working conditions and timings etc can be brutal. Give them love not grief. Oh, if you give them grief and get filled-in you've probably earned it.... ;-)

Anyone else seen the military out and about? on 15:42 - Mar 27 with 3747 views | homer_123 | From the Beeb's news feed: The British Armed Forces will turn three major conference venues into temporary NHS hospitals, according to an internal document seen by the BBC. It shows: Phase 1 is the Nightingale Hospital at the Excel Centre in London’s Docklands. The document states it will have capacity of between 4,000 and 5,000 beds and will open in the last week of March Phase 2 is a temporary hospital for England and Wales at the NEC centre in Birmingham. The document says it will have capacity for 5,000 beds and will open in mid-April Phase 3 is the Convention Complex - formally GMEX - in Manchester. The document states it will have 1,000 beds and open in mid-April Scotland is not mentioned in the document, but the Army there has already confirmed to the BBC that the Royal Engineers have visited the SECC in Glasgow as a possible site for a temporary hospital. A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said it was "working hard to identify where it can most effectively assist other government departments and civil authorities". "Through the Covid Support Force, the Armed Forces have over 20,000 personnel including specialist planners, medics and logisticians ready to assist with the response to the outbreak."

They’ll get neither love nor grief from me. Not until either are justified. I’m not interested in fetishising the military. The NHS are rightly lauded, and it’s a shame it’s taken this long for such recognition. There are going to be many people inside and out of the NHS who will have emotional and mental scars after this. We will need to heal together. Something I fear we are not particularly good at right now. I’ve seen seafarers say that without seafarers we would grind to a halt as a country. And the lifeline is firm thanks to the merchant navy (a WWII slogan). We would grind to a halt without many many people doing their part. What we would grind to a halt without, is the people. I accept the privilege of my current position, getting paid at home on leave as I normally would be. But now, more than ever, I am connecting with my neighbours. Those neighbours who only used to thank me when they saw me picking up litter, they thank me now for groceries, for a text message asking how they are. I’ve seen similar things on Facebook, people connecting more with their neighbours than ever before. This is our opportunity to forge the community spirit once more.

They are probably delivering emergency food packages for extremely vulnerable people the government have identified as being at risk. I am currently setting up the distribution centre for one of the boroughs and awaiting our delivery from them. [Post edited 27 Mar 2020 19:32]
