Covid-19 Those at risk - letter from NHS 09:30 - Apr 20 with 1170 views | Pinewoodblue | My wife received hers today and it is dated 15th April saying she must self isolate for 12 weeks starting from now, I know the government shoulders a lot of responsibility for the way things were handled in the early stages but to my mind the time taken to send the letter out confirms my long held view that the problem lies with the Administrative level between Government and frontline service providers. This is where the finger will point when a full enquiry is undertaken. Fortunately my wife had been alerted by Spinal Injuries Association that she should be receiving the letter and is now in her 6th week of Isolation. Administratively the NHS is not fit for purpose.

Covid-19 Those at risk - letter from NHS on 09:37 - Apr 20 with 1128 views | BlueBadger | It's probably fallen upon the shoulders of people working in clinical coding to identify such people and generate the appriate paperwork. They've got quite the database to be working with and sifting through, probably is multiple different systems and areas, plus, you might have heard that there's a few things going on at the moment. It's almost certainly not a case of 'let's bang out a mail shot'. The SIA by contrast will have a relatively small, mostly self-identified group to work with by comparison. On top of all that, we're saddled with a large chunk of our admin staff(roughly £4Bn+ wort) allocated to farming out services to the Efficient Private Sector(which also creates another tier of records and systems for the coders to sift through as well). So what you're saying is we need a national, digitised patient records database? Sounds good. How about Fujitsu?

I suspect that it's because most of the at-risk people would fall into the higher age bracket so may not be hooked up to the web or be able to use it that well. That and I suppose it looks more official than an email, especially when there are so many phishing scams/hoaxes out there.

It's very easy for emails of this kind to fall into spam boxes, wrong accounts(as in old accounts that people don't use any more, etc) and as you say, a physical item does look more 'official' to a lot of people.

And a typo in a postal address would probably not stop it reaching its recipient.

She doesn’t have any symptoms, she is just classified as vulnerable.

We all learn to live with typo mistakes. My wife’s bank changed computer systems years ago and input her Christian names in reverse order. They admit the error but won’t change it unless she takes in her birth and marriage certificates, which she refuses to do so. Today’s letter was clearly from the NHS as they also input her details wrongly onto their system, changed her middle name, but again they acknowledge their mistake but no one will take the responsibility of trying to change it.

True, but my point was that a typo in an email address means that it won't reach its recipient.

Covid-19 Those at risk - letter from NHS on 10:25 - Apr 20 with 982 views | DebsyAngel | I wasn't sure I would get a letter (I do have asthma and an underactive thyroid) as not in the "severe" category. But after checking a few times if my Dad was getting a letter (this was a month back when it was told that over 70s should isolate 12 weeks and the message and my pleading was just not getting through to my parents), my parents said they had not received anything. Just the government thing that everyone had got about the virus. My husband phoned my Dad's surgery and after a half hour wait on hold, the receptionist found my Dad's records and said that a letter will be sent as he has COPD, asthma and heart condition. They should been sent out by the end of March. And after asking my Dad when called him up the other day? "Still no letter". Appalling. Why not call their most at risk patients? I get it that they are busy but its not like people are going to their surgeries to be physically seen. Thankfully my parents have at last seen sense and go no further out than their garden.

I agree with these criticisms. The whole vulnerable category and letters thing has not been clear and has not been followed up.

The IT systems of any reputable organisation will throw up as potential fraud an attempt to alter names already in the system, i.e. a possible attempt to create a false identity. Therefore whoever is going to alter it needs a clear paper audit trail of independent evidence to make the alteration.

I think the intention was to target those with a compromised immune system, which is a side effect of current chemo/radiotherapy etc. Only person I know who has been told to 'shield' had his spleen removed some years ago after a car accident.

Well both myself and my son have had a few health issues in the past couple of years. The system the NHS uses to contact patients is pretty poor in all honesty. We have both received letters to attend appointments only to find the letter arrives after the appointment date had appointments cancelled that didn't exist. Other than that the care & treatment we have received has been top class.
