Kim Jong Un dead? on 09:00 - Apr 25 with 2610 views | Lord_Lucan | It seems there is some credibility in this. It coincides with them asking China to send in a team of "People" to NK including specialist medical bods and virus experts. Although it's a real turn up as until now they are recording zero infection rates in NK! Edit; So it seems Kim Wrong Un may have had heart surgery. [Post edited 25 Apr 2020 9:18]

Kim Jong Un dead? on 09:33 - Apr 25 with 2480 views | Steve_M | There's been rumours all week. Like Lucan said he seems to have had heart surgery but little known beyond that. Also rumours of China buying large amounts of rice auth no obvious need. It's not unknown for media organisations to make up story about North Korea though, what happens with a paranoid dictatorship that few know much about.

NK News reporting panic buying in Pyongyang due to import restrictions. Been keeping one eye on the news there for a few weeks, but not much, apart from speculation on KJU,s health. To be honest, they would be pretty slow announcing his demise if it were the case anyway.

Kim Jong Un dead? on 11:51 - Apr 25 with 2238 views | Guthrum | One thing which might suggest not is the absence, according to South Korean sources, of any sign of unusual military maneuvers, strengthening the inter-Korean border, etc., which you would expect during a leadership change. Especially a sudden and unexpected one with no clear line of adult succession (Jong-un's children are at most eight years old and the eldest is a daughter). The daughter thing is significant, as North Koreans don't favour girls for leadership positions (hence his wife is probably out of the picture, too). Indeed, the person seemingly best-positioned to succeed Jong-un in an emergency at present is his younger sister, Yo-jong. But, again, she is female and might be blocked or sidelined on those grounds. But it is possible she could act as de-facto Regent for an unknown young son. There is an elder brother, Jong-chul, but he was excluded from the succession back in the time of his father, Jong-il, as being unsuitable leadership material. The other elder half-brother, Jong-nam, was infamously murdered at Kuala Lumpur Airport. Otherwise, you have a power vacuum with the possibility of more distant relatives or senior military figures attempting to sieze power. Who the Chinese choose to support would have a major bearing upon the outcome of that. But it could be messy. At present, I think Jong-un may be ill (perhaps with Covid-19, or the reported heart problems), but not yet dead. The Chinese mission might be an attempt at succession planning if there is a danger he may not survive.

Indeed, the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, was not announced until three days after it had happened. Might be longer in this case with a less obvious line of succession.

I would be a rubbish dictator. Don't enjoy ordering executions or having to bump off members of my own family. Plus I'd be all: "Yeah, you're doing a good job in this factory, chaps", rather than the traditional browbeating and criticism.

Apparently they're sending fifty soldiers to do all that for you. The plane bringing them will take you back. Be ready and packed and at Bristol airport on Monday.

I am confident that with the right training and reconditioning most of us could do the job. After all, you would end up standing there while someone else carried out the orders. If you still didn't really buy into the regime, they only need to turn your microphone off and report what you have directed them to do.

I think Trump loves Kim because that level of control is Trump’s wet dream.

Would it actually make any difference if any of that family dynasty took over anyway?

Depends on who gets the power and how rational they are. Under Un North Korea has been seen as much more co operative with the world, although the benchmark wasn’t hard to top.

Part of it is the ongoing struggle between the armed forces, who were very much favoured by Jong-un's father, Jong-il, and the rest of society. The generals want everything subordinated to their funding and manpower needs (not to mention getting expensive new toys like rockets and nuclear weapons), which is starving the rest of the country (literally, at times). The military props up the regime, but at the same time is a threat, as the only people who could overthrow them. Jong-un, to some extent, moved away from his father's Military First philosophy and even reportedly purged a number of senior officers. But he has also given them some prestige titbits, like the aforementioned nukes and missile tests.
