Now that i have your attention, Mrs Pinewood and I are looking to move house and would ideally like to live in a village environment, within a roughly 10 mile radius of Bury St Edmunds, Any of you reprobates on here have any reccomendations as to where would be a good place to take root. Must have a good pub or 3 and a local shop. Large village green optional...........and definately not Royston Vasey. Thanks.
We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub.
Trouble with the pub recommendations is the rate they're disappearing.
Pick an area and take time to drive about a bit:
So, one afternoon, take on board the Elmswell, Thurston, Woolpit side of Bury, bearing in mind 2 of those are on the train line; useful for obvious reasons.
And maybe: Rougham, Drinkstone, Rattlesdon.
And also: Barrow, Chevington, Chedburgh.
That's how I would approach it personally. Get a feel for each pocket and take it from there.
Ixworth has two pubs, two cafes, a chippy, a Chinese takeaway, a Malaysian pop-up takeaway, a kebab van (that, strictly speaking is in Pakenham) two shops, its own microbrewery.

Already seen a place in Elmswell we like.
Thanks for the reply dear chap.

Incoming undesirables not welcome.

He's right though, again, some nice places around his side of Bury too.
Think not only Ixworth but Walsham, Bardwell, and the surroundings too. So that's 4 areas to look at so far.
Elmswell's reputation has swung one way and another over the years so I really would do the rounds for something so important. Maybe, if you get time, do have a pub lunch here and there and drop by the local shops for a nose.
I've lived around most of the areas I've listed hence I mention them.
There is the Cockfield side too; some lovely countryside but not a great deal of life pub/shop wise until you reach Lavenham. Even Facters has to ask permission to enter there and purchase a ticket in advance.

It's now £4 a day to park at Thurston station, an infinite percentage increase compared to a couple of years ago.

So if one lived there, not only would they not need to pay for train station parking themselves, an enterprising sort could charge a couple of quid per day for space on the driveway.
I do find the attraction of the Ipswich - Cambridge train line worth considering myself.
Football at the Town one direction, and a sunny afternoon of lunch and a few beers by the Cam, the other.

There was a time when I had season tickets in both directions from Thurston.
Upsides: About 20-30 minutes(depending on where in Bury you want to get to) out of Bury, presently some good pubs, well rated school, handy(as in 'an hour or thereabouts' drive)for Cambridge, Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford, useful local shops, quite a few village societies and clubs for all ages, genuine 'community' feel.
Downsides: I live there, quite close to a fair few other TWTD posters as well, public transport near non-existent, A definite 'local mindset'..

You are the obsolete SRN4 to my Fairey Rotodyne....

"Local mindset".
See any village anywhere to be fair.
Each time I move home I'm disappointed to see some things don't change.
Edit: again, not a bad looking area with some pretty surroundings. There was a time I would stop off by the river to watch the local barn owl do his teatime daily hunt.

You have your own wedding photos swap shop in Glemsford, I gather.

As a born-and-bred, I like to think we have a unique mindset in Glemsford - we probably don't though, but it can be broadly summed up as 'it's cool if you're you're black or white, but for fook's sake don't come from Cavendish or Melford'.

On a more practical level, I'd like to add 'really good dog walking routes'.
