Now that i have your attention, Mrs Pinewood and I are looking to move house and would ideally like to live in a village environment, within a roughly 10 mile radius of Bury St Edmunds, Any of you reprobates on here have any reccomendations as to where would be a good place to take root. Must have a good pub or 3 and a local shop.
Large village green optional...........and definately not Royston Vasey.
Thanks.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

There’s also Horringer that could be considered... always used to be nice, and Ickworth Park on the doorstep for lovely walks too, and a small stones throw from Bury.

Or the jewel in the crown of villages within 10 miles from Bury... Brockley Green - nothing much to note there now, but I was born in a house in Chapel Lane and lived there for the first 15 years of my life... and I turned out alright!

Trouble with the pub recommendations is the rate they're disappearing.

Pick an area and take time to drive about a bit:

So, one afternoon, take on board the Elmswell, Thurston, Woolpit side of Bury, bearing in mind 2 of those are on the train line; useful for obvious reasons.

And maybe: Rougham, Drinkstone, Rattlesdon.

And also: Barrow, Chevington, Chedburgh.

That's how I would approach it personally. Get a feel for each pocket and take it from there.

Good shouts.

Drinkstone is quite small, I don't believe it has a pub or shop. Rattlesden has both and is very nice.

I would add Pakenham, Tostock, Beyton and Norton to this list in the Elmswell, Thurston, Woolpit segment. All very close to Bury (10 minutes by car) due to proximity to A14. All 4 have pubs.

1,500 properties within 10 miles of BSE.

I would go for this one:

Finders fee applies, call it 1%.

The distance to the pub, with the closest being at the very least half a mile, may be a stumbling block, for an otherwise perfect option, presumably.

Could always fly, I guess. Park up in one of his own private hangers and then it's just a short 17 mile walk across his land home.

I live in Barrow (no stalkers please) and it's a lovely village. Two pubs, the shoes is spit and sawdust, the willow is shallots and sherry. Two decent shops, a nice friendly villagey one and a godawful happy shopper style one that's still useful for a late evening booze run. Plus a really quite decent chippy and a post office and little cafe at lock and load. People are quite nice overall, the odd bit of village drama if you bother to listen, but nothing that would put anyone off living here. Somewhat curious preoccupation with wild ducks.

4 stars.

Good point, and good advice - you're selling yourself short only asking for a 1% finders fee.

Chevington an chedburgh both nice but travel a few miles further from Bury an you could be in Hundon or even kedington. Admittedly kedington isn't as instantly attractive as some other Suffolk villages but it is within walking distance of Haverhill....

Glemsford:

Upsides:
About 20-30 minutes(depending on where in Bury you want to get to) out of Bury, presently some good pubs, well rated school, handy(as in 'an hour or thereabouts' drive)for Cambridge, Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford, useful local shops, quite a few village societies and clubs for all ages, genuine 'community' feel.

Downsides: I live there, quite close to a fair few other TWTD posters as well, public transport near non-existent, A definite 'local mindset'..

I'm seeing a recurring theme here... but it appears you're trying to sell that as a positive?

Steering someone towards being close to Haverhill is helpful? Blimey... next you'll start promoting Jaywick as the ideal staycation location...

At only 1 hour, 16 minutes, Haverhill to Jaywick isn't a bad run.

Jaywick is a tad underrated. It's clearly not got the cultural highpoints of Haverhill (not many places do) but it could possibly be described as up an coming with plenty of investment potential?
