Too little, too late. But the most important thing is that it's not exactly what Labour were calling for. So long as it's different in those respects, then it's fine.

Unfortunately necessary because the government did nothing significant a month ago but some very odd parts to this.
Where I do struggle is what is happening at schools. I think we should keep them open, but not hesitate to send home pupils or teachers with any symptoms that may be CV to await a test result.
Speaking to a teacher I know, this is deemed to be the parents responsibility in her school so if a kid turns up coughing and sneezing, she can't simply send her home. Not sure if that is typical or not.

Its mind numbingly stupid decision making isn't it? Or rather lack of decision making. It was inevitable the way figures were going, they were told that any delay would result in a larger problem to solve and now they have to go for 4 weeks as opposed to the 2 that were originally recommended. Utter incompetence at every turn.

Agree entirely about the government incompetence but I think the feeling among the scientists is that the 2 weeks wouldn't have been enough - the cases have vastly outpaced the modelling behind the 2 week proposal.
It still should have happened over half-term though and should have been 4 weeks then. Seems all Europe delayed this time as well which isn't going to be good.

My old boss used to say that sometimes it's better to make an imperfect decision than to dither and not make any decision at all. We had it with the first lockdown and dithering seems to be Boris's default position rather than leading.
Compare and contrast to the leadership shown by Jacinda Ardern in NZ. When they introduced a reduced pay support package for workers told to stay at home (not dissimilar to ours) she told all her cabinet that they would take a pay cut one too, as they were all in it together.

In my kid's school, some kids turning up and causing concern have been put in an isolation room. I'm presuming they're sent home as soon as a guardian can pick them up. Not very pleasant i spose, but can't blame them.
Part of the problem is knowing what's covid and what's not - there's been various advice to send a kid in if you think it's just a cold.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Surely we have to er on the side of caution. Yeah, it may be just a cold but surely the advice should be get a test first?
This should be mandated too, Dept of E should be all over this - with crystal clear guidelines issued to schools.

They should have closed schools, it's clear that half-measures have very little effect - perhaps the R will drop to around 1 which maintains a baseline level and then once the lockdown is lifted it rises again.
Given this it should have been a far stricter lockdown for 4 weeks at least, probably longer and with the full furlough scheme.
Messing around on the edges doesn't work whilst being incredibly harsh does seem to work (see Australia for instance).

So conflicted on schools tbh. We should be doing everything we can to keep kids in there imho. If it were just 4 weeks, and I thought the lockdown would then be done, I'd agree it's worth doing.
But I can't see this lockdown being less than 3 months tbh (With a "Boris saves xmas" week off in the middle)

Yeah it is confusing, but pretty sure that's what the advice is: no temp, cough, loss of smell, send them in.
NOTE: please don;t take my word for it anyone! Just my understanding.
The teacher I spoke to did not have the authority to send a pupil home as it is the parents' responsibility to decide if the pupil needed a test. So if her parents had not properly assessed whether the kid needed a test, she was stuffed.
Same with another teacher (I catch up with them in half terms) who told me her head had told her she (and pupils) could only take time off sick with a confirmed test. She still had ofsted targets on attendance which was evidently influencing her policies. I'd have happily told the head to gtf but appreciate I am a bit more assertive than many other people.

I think there is more chance of it being 4 weeks with the schools closed but I agree it's very unlikely. With the schools open I think there is no chance it will be 4 weeks and I also think the government should be honest now and just say Christmas isn't happening how many people want it to happen.
The way it's done now we will likely close the schools in the next lockdown. I agree it's bad for the kids but better to do it short and quick than the alternative which might come to pass of a longer lockdown with schools closed.
If Christmas goes ahead in any form then I think mid-January is going to be awful. It's sad to think of no Christmas with families but people need to be realistic.

The public are overwhelmingly in favour of further measures despite the dominant media narrative of both-sidesism again promoting grifters like Farage:
Slightly stricter for me. Especially if it's really only for four weeks. I suspect it isn't but we will see.
I know you think I want everyone to stay in 24/7 in a dark room with no windows but that really isn't true.
If we are going to have a month lockdown we really need to drive cases down as much as possible. People always push the boundaries so might have been better off slightly stricter. I hope it works and am more than willing to eat my words if it works well.

That's absolutely outrageous, sums up the sheer incompetence of this Govt. & why Covid19 is almost at the point of going completely out of control in the UK.

Was with you until you put J2 into the shadow cabinet. I submit my resignation on that basis.

The joke there is that Fergal & J2 would look competent in those roles compared with any of the current cabinet in their jobs.
