Calling ex players “Legends” has got to stop

It’s getting to the point when it’s every other player.

These are the legends we have.

Beattie
Mills
Wark
Crawford
Holland

That’s it!!

Any other player is a “ great”

Stop it

Holland shouldn’t be on such a shortlist in my opinion. What elevated him to ‘legend’ from ‘great’?

Also, you’ve missed Jay Tabb?

We have heroes and anti-heroes, is there such a thing as an anti-legend? Thinking of a 1980s left back.

Mr Ipswich

Captain fantastic

The main player in our last glory era

Probably the last one we’ll have in a very long time

Calling anyone who's had a couple of decent seasons a "legend" (see Marcus Stewart) is part of the modern dumbing down, knighthoods for everyone culture.
It's also part of the natural tendency of people to elevate players from their own memories e.g a guy called Doug Rees played 387 games for Town, but I've never heard of him.
Naturally, we will also elevate anyone who was involved in a club's most successful period - hence the status of those from around 1981.
The same with statues - we decided to have one for Kevin Beattie & so others pointed out that the likes of Mills & Wark were probably more deserving.

Much as we all love good ol' Matty, any player who was at the regular core of a team that obtained any of the three stars has to go in ahead.

In addition, five players won league championship medals under Alf as we stormed Div 3, 2 & 1 : (Bailey, Carberry, Elsworthy, Phillips and Leadbetter). How can these not be legends no matter who did, or did not, see them play?

I assume the first two lines are talking about Holland, and the second two were regarding Tabby?

Also, using your own classification I would still only have Holland in the ‘great’ category.

Agreed

I’ve always put Wark and Mills ahead of Beattie.

What happens when they pass away, do they get statues as well?

Definitely need a category for the likes of Jay Tabb, Paul Anderson, Alan Quinn and Dan Harding - 60 odd games over a few seasons, didn't pull up any trees but never really let anyone down, went on their way with a firm handshake and some solid old-fashioned goodwill.

Holland played over 300 games for Town which put him in the top 30 appearance makers.
Luke Chambers is going to make the top 10 this season & while he's been a solid, dependable pro for nearly 10 years, I would hesitate to call him a "legend" because this has coincided with probably the most dismal period in Town's professional existence. However, despite my aversion to "testimonial" games for modern, well-paid footballers, I certainly wouldn't begrudge Luke one.

“ Holland played over 300 games for Town which put him in the top 30 appearance makers.”

Which is why he’s ranked as a ‘great’ in my book. Not a ‘legend’.

Depends on how you see it I guess. To me the old guard are immortals, but the legends are the ones that moved me to tears after a stunning season to be promoted and then taking the Premier League unaware.

The best part of the first GB year in the premier league for me was Chelsea at home on boxing day, they were 2-0 up but the crowd never acted like it. The team never once felt like they would lose that day, and indeed we drew 2-2 by the end.

Seeing those players do it time and time again defy the odds and not giving up until the final whistle made them legends in my mind.

The age of supporters makes a massive difference. I remember Man U supporters voting Eric Cantona their "best all time player" despite the fact that he only played 143 games for them & ignoring the claims of players from a different generation, such as Bobby Charlton 7 George Best.
