Starmer begins a party election broadcast with "I love my country....."

We continue with our Le Penn moment.....'but the Left!!!'

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

The appeal to nationalism at the very start of the broadcast just said...."yep, I've got nothing!"

Edit....just a shame the focus groups didn't read the tea leaves before Brexit!

Patriotism and left wing policies aren't mutually exclusive. Starmer clearly needs to up his game and should perhaps bring forward his policy agenda more quickly but until Labour understands the first sentence we'll have permanent Tory governments.

The reason Labour does so well in Wales still is because it's the only country in GB that hasn't ceded the flag and national identity to the Tories or the nationalists.

He is trying to play the game their way. It can't be easy trying to play properly while the other side cheats and wins all the time. Brexit is still destroying our nation, I've seen local comments today saying the tories have been voted in locally because they did so well on brexit. WTAF?

They got it done buh! Never mind the consequences, that's all that matters to some. That it was a monumental act of national self harm predicated on lies is neither here nor there to many people.

It is the positioning at the start of the whole broadcast that got my goat....It was the point at which I swiched off and if you didn't hear the laughter from the Brexit voting working class then you have your ears closed!

And your comment is why Hartlepool has fallen to the Conservatives. You miss the point that most people are patriotic and this narrative that they shouldn't be winds them up to the extent they won't vote for a party (labour) that has forgotten that.

Its why Starmer said it.

But its not enough as they don't trust the left of the Labour party.

The left need to be ejected like they were under Kinnock.

Too many people aren't feeling the consequences yet. It's easy to dismiss exports crashing and the fishing industry and farmers being utterly screwed over when you don't know any of those people personally. For many Brexit voters, life hasn't really changed post-Brexit and they'll chalk that up as a success. Maybe things will change when they head off to Spain for a holiday and spend hours queuing at passport control.

I think the pandemic has played a big part in this. Things haven't really affected them yet because we haven't been about to do much the last year. When things start getting more normal and they are "allowed" to do things I think the consequences of Brexit will become much more visible to many.

As I said yesterday, you'll never form a government by seeking to appeal to the Che Guavara T-shirt and socialist worker seller outside the Post Office crowd as Labour have been bent on doing between 2015 and 2019.

Pining for the Dear Leader is like whining that Paul Lambert should have kept his job.
Starmer is the politics equivalent of Paul Cook, endlessly shuffling his pack in a search for someone who a)isn't crap and b)actually going to play for him.

Cornwall Council might be worth looking at. The Newlyn seat will move away from the Tories as it's the biggest fishing port in England and they're all fuming down there.

As an area they voted to leave though.

It's all very well being fuming now but perhaps they should have considered the consequences before they put their cross in the box?

Absolutely. Many people may never feel direct consequences (which also says a lot about the lies that the EU used to control everything, bt that's another story). And they simply don't care about people who are impacted. We're turning into a nation of selfish a-holes.

Stokie's pont about the pandemic is very relevant too. Brexit impacts have certainly been overshadowed so far. Although I suspect the big Covid recovery forecast for this year will again mask a lot of the effects and be milked for all it's worth by the Government (even though we'll still all be in worse position than we were before the Tories started wrecking the place).

Labour completely screwed up with having Corbyn at the helm - whilst party membership and such might be high, that man has done more to put people off labour than ever before. Completely marginalising the North East because of his ridiculous, outdated stances on everything...and if you manage to marginalise the North East with that approach then you know you have it wrong.

I still recall the night of the last election and some of the ridiculous Corbyn at all costs type posts on here from otherwise sensible people. I dread to think what was being written on other platforms that I don't use.

Starmer is just a nothing candidate and again they can't and won't compete. The Hartlepool result was entirely predictable.

Trouble is, cold, hard pragmatism and facts are no match for fairies, unicorns and £350M a week(roughly half the cost of privately run 'NHS' track and trace, by the way) for the NHS.

If Starmer thinks he can play the Tories at the patriotism game, he's peeing in the wind. Nothing to stop him trying though. I think Starmer's also hamstrung (possibly moreso) by character. Johnson's acting and bluster seems to win him a lot of support. Starmer is clearly the more competent and diligent man, by a HUUUUGE distance, but people don't want that for some reason. And then nobody really knows what Labour stand for, which is another issue, although possibly not as large a one as is often made out.

To be fair, Labour are bringing Jezza into it:

Once again I think that totally misses the context of Brexit, Covid and the UKIP votes in the last election.

If the Dear Leader had actually bothered his arse to campaign for his party's 'remain' position and use his alleged powers of He Egages with Young People(a significantly under-represented group n turnout in 2016 who probably would have swayed the result the other way) in the 2016 referendum we might have actually stayed, the Tories would now be tearing themselves apart over Blue Passports and No Foreigners whilst lurching ever further towards extremism and, in the worst case scenario, we'd probably be living under coalition government in the EU, right now.
