Remember him? Just had a blinding season with Cambridge and turned down a new contract with them. Now Sunderland, Charlton and Oxford fighting over him

Me too. Digby was largely terrible. I’m glad he had a good season in League 2 because that’s his level.

If Greg Taylor is the leader of Cambridge United’s pack, Paul Mullin the lethal finisher, Wes Hoolahan the creator-in-chief, then there is a case to be made that Paul Digby is the heartbeat of the side.

The 26-year-old has been a colossal presence in the midfield since joining from Stevenage in the summer, and it is about far more than physical appearances.

Digby’s stature stands out, as does his booming voice issuing instructions, but there is more than just the obvious that makes him so distinguishable.

His drive and athleticism with and without the ball epitomises the ethos of the squad that United have built this season

Wouldn’t have fitted in last season but a Paul Cook type of player.

He was with Stevenage last season who should have done down. EDIT He did however get to the playoffs with FGR the previous year.

Jackson had 1 good season in league 2 and lets see how that worked out.......

However, someone like Emmanuel went to Hull and got promoted with them. Who'd have thought that. DIfferent teams, different styles, different personnel.

In fairness with Emmanuel they only played him maybe 1 or 2 times after the Christmas break, which was when they went on their good run

"Digby was largely terrible"?
I think he started one league game for Town, in which we drew 0-0 with Middlesbrough, who were promoted. Otherwise, he played a couple of Cup games & made a few cameo appearances from the bench. Very hard to judge a player on that.
Digby was a typical cheap Mick punt, who didn't het too many chances, presumably because he wasn't better than what we already had. This is also typical of the short termism which has stunted Town's player development over the years. See also players like Hourihane, Emmanuel & Moore. Maybe Cook's better funded short termism will get us up; if it doesn't, we may regret dumping our younger fringe players.

I watched an ITFC under 23 side lose to AFC Sudbury in pre-season one year under Mick. Digby's booming voice is my main remaining memory of that evening. Proper Northern and could probably be heard out in the car park and beyond.

Never got to see much of him on the pitch here, but he certainly came with a bit of pedigree from yoof level so must've had something about him. Seems like he's a leader, a bit of a throwback maybe. We've really lacked those in our side, especially in Downes absence. As technically sound Dozzell et al are, they're very meek and submissive. We need some leaders.

I got the impression on that evening that he wasn't necessarily the most technically adept but he had the qualities you mention.

Maybe not enough to have got in the first team at that point but he could perhaps have contributed more recently.

The only obvious downside is he has only scored one goal in his career todate.

Was a real high character person and player, management loved him and always someone who would go on to have long career in lower levels as just did as much as he could to be a pro

I agree with your second paragraph, but not the first. In the few games I saw him play (the home appearances), I couldn’t see what Mick saw in him. I genuinely thought ‘nothing there’ and I was not alone. As you rightly point out, it was a typical Mick punt in the barrel scraping years and to be fair to Mick, some turned out successful so hats off to him. He did amazingly well to find the players he did, as his laughably inept successors proved.

But Digby? If he’s improved so much, Mick will no doubt be in for him, but if it was my expert (ahem, whistles loudly😱) choice, I’d swerve that one.

Also scored the only goal in Town's friendly at Cambridge in pre-season last year. Thought he played well in that game from what I remember.
