In fact, of the 29 athletes from Northern Ireland in Rio, the vast majority - 21 - have chosen to represent Team Ireland, including Belfast-born boxer Paddy Barnes, who was the team's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Only eight are representing Team GB.
One thing is certain. "Team Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands and UK Overseas Territories" doesn't roll easily off the tongue. | |

United Kingdom = England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
Ireland = Republic of Ireland
Ireland/Island of Ireland = Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
British Isles/British and Irish Isles = Great Britain, Island of Ireland, Isle of Mann, etc

Great Britain was formed in 1707 by the Act of Union between the kingdoms of England (including Wales) and Scotland. From 1603 until that year they had still been separate, but with the same person as monarch.
