Difference between GB and UK? on 11:33 - Jul 27 by Kropotkin123 | Britain = England and Wales Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales United Kingdom = England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales Ireland = Republic of Ireland Ireland/Island of Ireland = Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland British Isles/British and Irish Isles = Great Britain, Island of Ireland, Isle of Mann, etc EDIT: The most succinct answer to your question would be Northern Ireland. Strictly speaking, 'Great Britain' by itself is merely the geographic island in which England, Scotland and Wales are all found. 'GB' has no constitutional meaning by itself. But 'the UK of GB and NI' makes both geographic and constitutional sense.

It also doesn't include parts of England, Scotland or Wales. Great Britain is the biggest of the British Islands. So English islands like the Isle of Wight, Scottish islands like the Orkneys, and Welsh islands like Anglesey aren't included. Greater Britain is the term I think that they should use, as it would denote "Great Britain etc", in the same way that Greater London or Greater Manchester are used. While we're on incorrect, or misleading, names/titles... What is the current Queen's title?

Difference between GB and UK? on 12:23 - Jul 27 by Pinewoodblue | Britain = England and Wales…..really? |
I'm sure someone with better knowledge on it will be able to expand. But yes, from memory the Roman's referred to the England (up to Hadrian's Wall) and Wales as the Kingdom of Brittania. This developed into Britain. Great Britain (Or Greater Britain) therefore refers to the extension of this area to include the whole of the island. The name Great Britain has nothing to do with how marvellous we are or are not. So what makes Britain Great is essentially Scotland... which is quite worrying. [Post edited 27 Jul 2021 14:41]

Ok, no one is biting. Our Queen is called Elizabeth the Second of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (and other isles etc). But she isn't the Second Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom (etc). The Act of Union, which united the English and Scottish thrones, took effect in 1707, and Queen Elizabeth the First of England had been dead for over a hundred years when it was signed. So our Queen is either Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom (etc), Queen Elizabeth the First of the United Kingdom (etc) or Queen Elizabeth the Second of England and First of Scotland, which was how the first Jacobean King was styled, although that pre-dated the Act of Union. Personally, I think just Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom is correct.

No, James I wanted to make it clear he wasn't the ruler of Britain (Roman Britain) and therefore declared the territory of England, Scotland and Wales to be Great Britain, in order to distinguish it from Britain. [Post edited 28 Jul 2021 22:52]

I imagine that there will be a celebration in Ireland in December 2021 or early in 2022. We don't really need to celebrate the fact that we became the current version of the UK in 1921/2, after several centuries of appalling behaviour. (Or, writing as a person of partly Irish descent, perhaps we do) [Post edited 28 Jul 2021 23:37]
