Pick up a reasonably cheap 2nd hand MacBook Pro or air from Facebook marketplace, anything 2015 onwards should be perfect and will be so much better than any modern windows based laptop

Thanks. She says there are 2 polarised camps on this but at the moment she is leaning towards agreeing with you.

Any particular apps that need to run, or just basic office type things? Worth considering a chromebook? They are getting better and better, and really good value to be had.

Acer Spin series are good...

Smaller, I have a Lenovo Duet, which I use when travelling, and its brilliant.

I second the chromebook. Love it. Cheap, simple, reliable. It's a bendy thing as well so can use it like a tablet when needed.

This does sound like the way to go, especially if MS Office isn't needed. They are cheap and light.

Hard to argue with a Chromebook. Got an HP one for $99. Hook it up to a good sized monitor and you’re all set.

Given a HP Elitebook 830 when I started my new job a couple of weeks ago, seems pretty good.

You can get a refurbished one for £450 from laptops direct.

I only have experience of the one I am currently have which is a Lenovo 300E, I think that model is no longer made though.

I would add that the battery life on it is excellent too.

Bear in mind that chromebooks are all centred around access to google drive and you dont get much internal storage, so you do you need a networkfor your documents. That might be an issue access is needed to them when offline.

Thanks, this is all gobbledegook to me but I am sure it will make sense to the shopper one!

I'd recommend a Surface Laptop Go - around the £500 mark, very light, touchscreen etc.

Also check out Currys on ebay for refurb ones etc.

Here's a refurb one from Argos...

Runs a version of the dreaded windows and it’s bloated software though doesn’t it?

You're being ridiculous. I use Windows for software development every day and it's fine.

My daughter has a cloud book and it’s very good. Does everything she needs it to do.

It runs Windows, which is still the best PC based OS for most uses.

If it’s for 6th form, unless the school uses g suite, a chrome book isn’t a great idea!

Why on earth would you pay good money for a logo?

May be worth thinking about subjects as well - if it's e.g. English Lit, History and French, then get something cheap - if there's potentially statistics, design, maps etc. involved then maybe worth making sure you get 8gb+ RAM and a decent processor - just to future proof yourself against a request for an upgrade in a year or two.

If that is all that it is needed for then a Chromebook at just over £200 new is absolutely fine.

A 10 year old third hand refurbished laptop for 40 quid from Ebay could probably manage essays and research, to be honest.

Is the argument I just lost with her that knows best! The latest 8 month old Macbook air 8 months warranty £650 in Ipswich somewhere.
