What has happened to our support over the last 5/6 years? I vividly remember turning up to Charlton on a Saturday afternoon when we were top of the championship in the playoff season, and being able to get a ticket on the turnstiles in the away end no trouble at all and there even being a decent number of empty seats. Now, with us mid table in league one it’s looking like charlton tickets may not even get to general sale for a midweek fixture. Surely that incredible rise in support levels can’t be just down to the new ownership. What other reason are there for for this seemingly extraordinary recent increase in support? I see your point, but surely being top of the championship in December and the premier league seemingly on the horizon would have given us at least as much hope as we have now?

Larger population coupled with a renaissance in hope and more attractive football.
It is still the away support that is more notable than the home following.
Maybe Covid and no attendance for a year play into it a bit. Maybe the opportunity to visit different grounds too. I think there is a feeling we are on the cusp of our fortunes improving dramatically. The last time there was any feeling like that Magilton was our manager and the optimism evaporated far too quickly. |  |

Which would fit with the first part and the new grounds.
There was a lot of optimism around the arrival of Hurst and then Lambert. We hadn't had that buzz of a change of manager and a different approach for many years before it. | |

Let’s be clear in 17/18 mid table championship we were getting 13/14k home gates…. Because the football was unwatchable and Marcus seemed to not care about the club

Charlton away and Fulham away always well populated by blues… it’s the home gates that are showing the renewed hope and enjoyment of more attractive play

Look at Brighton, they used to get 8,000 at the old Goldstone Ground. They are now up to 30,000. Just shows you what can be done if you stick some decent money behind a club and put a proper management structure in place. | |

The crucial difference with that Charlton match in 14-15 was that it was on Sky and a lunchtime kick off, even so there were very few seats and can only have been a handful of tickets left for general sale.
Portman Road was pretty full with 20,000+ crowds for plenty of games that season - Watford, Middlesbrough, Charlton and especially Forest in April - and we took 4,000 (or was it 5?) to Southampton for an FA Cup third round match.
Yes, the support this season is impressive, especially given that results remain middling, but let's not pretend that the relative success of 14-15 didn't have the same impact. |  |

I should think partly it's also that people are enjoying the chance to travel again after lockdown, and this is pretty much as local as it gets in this league. People have simply missed the big away day, and mid- November is a great time to combine some fresh air with a trip to a couple of pubs.
In their own small way, Colchester have the same thing this weekend, away at Stevenage. Away allocation sold-out instantly and now waiting for more. And in this case, it has little or nothing to do with any 'feelgood factor' around the club, just people wanting to BE fans again. |  | | |
