Do people think the season is over? 11:22 - Jan 30 with 6208 views | unstableblue | A deflating performance yesterday, with the Ipswich disease of 5,6,7 players putting in sub 5/10 performances on a big occasion. I thought Sheff Weds could have been beaten yesterday, but Town beat themselves with a lacklustre and unadventurous performance, strewn with errors. But we have been improving, there were a lot of changes in the team, and Morsy suspension is a massive blow to our team. Don’t get too low, and don’t get too high! Albeit Wimbledon was also not a great performance. So do you think we still have a chance of sneaking into the play offs?? Win the next three, including STEPPING UP for the MKDons away mega clash… and we’ll be believing again. But I don’t fancy our chances given their form, style and our history of wilting on the big game. But Morsy returning will be big.

Do people think the season is over? on 11:27 - Jan 30 with 3421 views | FoghornGleghorn | From what we've seen, I'm not sure it matters anyway...given how we seem to keep throwing in dreadful performances just as a decent run gets going, even if we put an incredible enough run together to squeak in, I can't imagine how we'd avoid that happening in the play-off games too.
Do people think the season is over? on 11:28 - Jan 30 with 3419 views | bluefunk | Given that we were lacking our 2 first choice midfielders it was always going to be a struggle. If we keep winning 2 and losing 1 that’s still 2 points a game, which would put us there or thereabouts in a typical season, which of course thus may not be. We do need to beat MKD though, the three pointers will continue to be crucial
Do people think the season is over? on 11:33 - Jan 30 with 3393 views | RIPbobby | I get the feeling that, just like at Bolton some new signings have come in against us and changed the opposition for the better. Our manager seems to read a team very well, minus when surprise new players come in. Window is almost over so hopefully we won't get beaten by the unknown again.
Do people think the season is over? on 11:41 - Jan 30 with 3355 views | hammo56 | For me this season has been over for sometime. Although we have shown on a few occasions that we might look like we will go on a run we are far to inconsistent to do so. It’s all about next season and imo that starts now and hopefully KM will be able to weed out those players who just don’t perform enough on a regular basis and replace them.
Do people think the season is over? on 11:47 - Jan 30 with 3334 views | Darth_Koont | It’s also important to point out that they could and possibly should have beaten us 3-0. I don’t think the season is over but we’re not going to win enough games if we don’t adapt during games. A disadvantage of playing it out from the back is that the centre-midfield and wing-backs drop back for the shorter balls and then there’s a massive gap up to the frontline. Weds and Bannan in particular just filled that space and pushed up on us. In hindsight, but it also felt like that for much of the game, we should have looked at hitting the front earlier, and pushing players up to win second balls or pressure mistakes. I can understand McKenna wants to build the style and needs time to do so, but a bit more pragmatism and League One football would have helped yesterday. Not least because of the blustery conditions and bobbly pitch that really didn’t help the style we were going for.

Do people think the season is over? on 11:49 - Jan 30 with 3324 views | Churchman | I’ve felt since Cook was deservedly kicked out the season was 90% over. Our start killed us. There was an outside chance of going on a run and there still is if we win the next couple. However, in reality I see the rest of this one as KM settling in, getting his methods established, players stepping up or shipping out and putting together the heart of a team for next season. That’s why I was so pleased to see a decent keeper sign to add to a good number of decent players for this level who are a good age and contracted to us. We need to take something from what’s been a disappointing season to date. This is not the ‘free hit’ nonsense some people talk about, it’s about building something with no more bomb squad histrionics, panic buys and throwing mud at the wall approaches.

Exactly. Mckenna is giving every impression of not allowing yet another coast to the end of the season.

Do people think the season is over? on 11:57 - Jan 30 with 3260 views | Ftnfwest | To break it down a bit we do have a run of games still to the end of Feb where we could well pick up a few wins but immediately it comes down to the next three culminating in mk dons. Need to win the next two and at least avoid losing at mk otherwise yes that’s it. But if we don’t at least win the next two we really don’t deserve it anyway! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

It’s vital he doesn’t if we are to avoid a ‘rinse and repeat’ scenario. Wigan took good form from the back end of last season and a pattern of playing into this season, added some better players to it and bingo, they look like they are going to stroll it. It’s the way to do it. You are right. McKenna doesn’t seem the type to do coasting. I notice that doesn't publicly get too ‘up’ when we win or too ‘down’ when we don’t either. We all love a bit of passion, but the toys out of the pram Cook style or the weird Lambert rubbish is not what I want to hear and I can’t imagine the players do either.

If it’s likely more about next season than this (which I agree with) and trusting the process/building then that’s pretty much the definition of a free hit. Results-wise we take every game as it comes, aim for three points, and see where that takes us. But the bigger picture is a side capable of getting up, staying up and building a Championship promotion team which is at least a 2-3 year timeframe maybe longer. At least, we seem to have dropped the “promotion at all costs” talk that was way too prevalent at the beginning of the season. Which can only be a good thing for actually building something long-term.

Do people think the season is over? on 12:09 - Jan 30 with 3154 views | skinnybob72 | I was looking at recent end of season L1 tables and you need c75+ points to get into the play-offs. Town therefore need another 34 points - which is effectively 12 wins from the final 17 games - anyone see that happening? The other noticeable thing from the current table is that the teams above Town have all lost between 4 and 7 games so far, Town have lost 10. In short, to make the play-offs, Town need to have an exceptional end to the season coupled with a couple of teams having a complete collapse. IMO the season is largely over barring a miracle.

What exactly does this dreadful ‘free hit’ phrase actually mean? The expectation is that we win every game. The hope is that we make the play offs. The reality is that we probably won’t (in my view). The reality is that if, come what may, we finish with a better team than we started with there will be a platform on which we can build. I don’t see any of that as a ‘free hit’.

Yep season over I'm afraid. We have beaten the rubbish teams recently and even then very unconvincingly against AS and Wimbledon. Not really creating chances and fragile defensively. Not going to beat the top 8 teams in this league in a hurry. Expect unconvincing wins in the next two, although we may struggle against Doncaster, beyond that can see us winning one, losing one for the rest of the season when we really need to win 2 lose 1. I have been wrong many times before though. It's amazing how quickly the hope of new manager and a seemingly new more structured approach has already gone. Now seems lacking in ideas how to break teams down and defence has definitely got worse over the past few games.

All true and likely to be borne out. But if we’d won yesterday it would have still been 11 wins out of 17 which I’m sure would have been glossed over in the euphoria.

Hi Darth It should have been 3-0, but in part again by our errors, easy ball turnover and general looseness We really did play it out of the back, and when you're playing poorly as we were it looked somewhat kamikaze yesterday! I just think Bakinson was not able to play his role, I do think El Miz was OK in parts.. but he struggle to link front to back, as you point out. The difference was a few Sheff Wed players like Bannan.. who stayed in shape and didn't fluff his lines in terms of distribution which cut us open. Bakinson was way to safe, and at times error strewn. and with Burns being a bit conservative and offering no threat... we were easy to control.. when ever we ran at them in numbers and got players in the box... weds sh@t themselves... but we did it about 3 times.. take the Wolfenden run... We just needed too break the lines

It means the pressure is off (or at least significantly lessened) for a manager coming in during a season and not being expected to challenge straightaway. Obviously when he’s had time with the players (and more than a January transfer window that came too quickly and didn’t give much room for manoeuvre considering our already large squad) then the pressure to deliver and expectations will increase. This is a window of opportunity for someone like McKenna who wants to coach a style/team, rather than squeeze as much as he can out of each result in any way possible.

Sure, but I think it was a team problem yesterday. Bannan was a case in point, a very good player but he could just float in that position further up the pitch with almost all of our play ahead of him on our side of the halfway. We didn’t have him turning or backtracking at almost any stage. We put pressure on our less experienced players to dig us out of trouble, and little or no pressure on Bannan who could hurt us when the ball was turned over. At a certain point, we needed to forget about possession and concentrate on territory and bringing the play further up the pitch, even if it was just to scrap for second balls. It also doesn’t have to be one or the other, but our inability to mix it up meant Wednesday could settle pretty comfortably into their approach for pretty much the entire game.

COMPARING rivals FIXTURES... gives a ray of hope on 12:49 - Jan 30 with 2918 views | unstableblue | As someone said on this thread.. win 2, lose 1 every 3 games and we'll be close to play-offs.. and with our fixtures and the returning Morsy/Evans.. that could be a real possibility I think Thompson is going to be good. And I think we could destroy the Gills and then get 3 points at Donny.. with a bit of rotation up front (Piggot?) ahead of Stadium MK BUT LOOK AT THESE fixtures for MK (P29 Pnts 52), Wycombe (P29 Pnts 52) and Oxford (P28, Pnts 49), compared to ours (P29 Pnts 41): MK Lincoln (h) Fleetwood (a) Ipswich (h)!! Sunderland (a)!! Charlton (a)!! Bolton (h)! Wycombe (poor form of late) Cambridge (a) Shrews (h) Lincoln (a) Cheltenham (h) Wigan (h)!! Accrington (a)! Oxford Wigan (a)!!! - game in hand Pompey (h)! Accrington (a)! Bolton (h)! Charlton (a)! Crewe (a) Ipswich Gills (h) Donny (a) MK Dons (a)!! - Morsy returns Burton (h) Cheltenham (h) Morecombe (a) In short, Ipswich need to concentrate on themselves.. there are A LOT of points on the table in Feb.. and without a doubt our rivals are going to drop serious points...
