Just thinking about what those poor people are going through in Ukraine. The rest of the world need to wreck the Russian economy; after the initial burst of nationalism people will turn on the regime.

The pictures being shared on twitter are horrible. Loss of life already, panic etc. I know the lines are slightly different, but will this be another Bosnia?

I've got a few ex-students who are Ukranian and it's hard not to think about them as they will have family there right now. Hopefully Brits see sense and join the EU and others in support and taking refugees or whatever else we can do.

It's hearbreaking. There's a huge sense of inevitability about it, but perhaps blindly I've been in denial that it would get to this stage.

Feck Putin and feck anyone who voted for him.

It would be shameful if we didn't take a share of the refugees. I wonder how the 'kippers and plain nasties will react under these circumstances.

Sadly I’ve always thought it’d go that way, but I think really only that animal really knew.

If you are Russian do you get the opportunity not to vote for him? I suspect that if you don’t vote the right way, you get a ‘visit’ and a little outdoor holiday far far away.

It's surreal. I've been in denial as well. It just can't happen in this day and age. Yet here we are.

Truly impaired.

Probably an element of that, and after years power, influencing the media, nationalistic rehetoric, influencing teachings in schools etc its really no wonder 75% of the populus voted for him. It's deeply concerning, I really hope the younger generation resent the latest hostility, are perhaps better educated, exposed to other forms of less controllable media and maybe the tide turns in favour of peace and democracy. Can only hope.

This is the time for the west to respond very seriously.

I think the sanctions need to extend to all of Russia. They need cutting off from the international financial system (swift BIC) so that Putin can be toppled from the inside.

Some sanctions against a few Billionaires won't cut it.

Really not the time for Boris to talk the talk and then bottle anything vaguely serious.

The trouble is Russia has billions in reserve he has been planning this for years, they estimate he has 2 years worth for foreign currency in reserve. Sanctions are required but it's not going to be an instance response.
Plus sanctions will only work if they are coordinated globally they need to come from UK, US, EU plus the rest of the world including China but we know China aren't going to get involved in any sanctions against Russia and while China refuses the impact of sanctions will be limited

USM loves the fact that our ruling party are funded by a violent, corrupt and bigoted despot.

Especially given China will now embark on taking Taiwan, no coincidence this has started just as the Winter Olympics has finished...

You are right. Sanctions work only to make it look like the weak west is doing something.

Old wobble cheeks can bluster all he wants (before cracking open a bottle or two) - Putin knows it’s just excess gas. Not even worth a call to tell him to button it and mind his manners.

Sabres will be rattled, Boris will polish his peashooter, outrage, protests, stern looks, shhhhh, bring on the cheap oil and gas and hope Putin has a rest before the next phase.
