Ukrainian citizens are getting galvanised by acts of defiance and atrocity... 14:23 - Feb 25 with 4746 viewsunstableblue

... the Snake Island 'heroes', the woman confronting the soldier, the car mown down by a missile carrier, the scenes of aggression...

now 18,000 machine guns distributed to Kiev citizens, instructions on molotov cocktails...

... I predict Russia is about to have its own Leningrad.... and i'm just not sure their troops have the stomach, nor the volumes for that?

One thing is for sure, there are going to be a lot of casualties.

70% of Ukrainians voted to join the EU; the Orange protests were mass and ousted a Russian puppet elected falsely. This is not a people who are Russian sympathisers or feel some allegiance to Moscow.

I just hope the citizens of St Petersburg and Moscow look past the state media, get out in numbers and defy the mass arrests, combine that with oligarchs/mafia turning on Putin

Heard earlier about the petrol bombs. Can imagine an awful lot of ordinary Ukrainians more than happy to see Russian tanks/soldiers burning. One presumes there would be some nasty reprisals too.

What Putin has unleashed could play out a number of ways but the idea Ukrainians will simply accept occupation with minimal resistance seems wildly optimistic to me.

Going to be a blood bath. I'd like to see charges of war crimes brought asap - if only to temper those on the edges of the Kremlin.

I have seen this 70% figure for support of EU membership. I don't believe it was an actual vote, though, rather an extrapolation of survey data (but I don't know).

However, it is clear there is majority support for it and opposition to Russian occupancy. Contrast that to our democratic decision based in 52% of those who voted (and with Russian influence on the campaign acknowledged too).

I do hope the appetite quickly evaporates from the Russian forces and Putin is soon gone.

I know what you are saying - but by that logic the resistance fighters in occupied Holland/France etc. would have rolled over during WW2. Same with the Afghans during Soviet occupation in the 80s.

I think anyone brave enough to stand up to an oppressive occupier should be saluted - especially given the incredible personal risk in so doing.

Any reprisals will lay at the door of those doing them.

Russia's a young country, anyone under 40 won't remember/know what it was like to live under the Soviet Union and have been accustomed to western way of life.

This could get ugly for Putin.

I hope so, but those people will also have heard about it from their older relatives and I don't think modern-day Russia is anything like a comfortable place to express opposition to its authorities.

Of course the resistance should only target the Russian soldiers/tanks etc.

The point I was making (sorry if unclear) was that if that Ukranian resistance led to Russian reprisals - it would still be justifiable.

Regarding War Crimes

I think the Court should start preparing the paperwork, put Putin, his henchmen and Generals on notice that they will be facing charges and give them an indication of the likely sentences based on the tariff given to Milosovich and Mladic

That might give the Generals pause for thought

Not sure it would cut through Putin's Messiah Complex

Absolutely - not suggesting it will immediately make him take stock. But those around him may not be so keen on spending their last years in a prison cell as some Serbian warlords have.

Russia are already attacking civilian targets. It's all over the news.

If this was happening in London I, as a civilian, would be looking to fight.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Yeah I tend to agree.

I can understand Victors saying there about giving the invaders further excuse to hurt civilians, and it will, but those who are desperate to fight back will do one way or another.

And as such, must have the best chance possible.

I don't know what they have in the way of personal weapons and ammunition stocks but I hope it's enough to go around.

I wouldn't be surprised if we also see some of those who, (understandably), fled the country, make a return at some point too.

Unfortunately, not really. Any occupier brutal enough to inspire that kind of resistance also tends to take out their vengeance upon innocent civilians, often with mass reprisal killings.

Given the actions of the Russian military in Chechnya and Syria then I'm not sure it's going to be much of a deterrent.

This is true too.

Naturally the fewer casualties the better, but equally it's human nature to want to fight back, especially when your home is being invaded.

We shall see.

It's frustrating feeling helpless though, I do know that.
