“stormy seas” caused it to sink apparently. Should have stuck to lakes and ponds.

Yep, stormy seas under tow. According to the Russians earlier in the day, no casualties which is remarkable for a warship crammed with munitions and fuel. Normally, you can expect a lot of killed and injured with an ‘accident’ like that. When the special operation is over, they must tell us all about their remarkable damage control. Seems like they took the words of those brave Ukrainian soldiers on that island literally.

Also moscow has announced that it has suffered no combat casualties during its special military operation. There has been, however, a tragically high number of road traffic accidents involving Russian tanks and soldiers.

I would imagine that for saving the whole crew in stormy seas after a tragic, unavoidable, all the fault of the west accident the captain will be up for a promotion. A new command of one shovel far to the east or maybe even a 6ft hole in the ground. Whichever option, he will be forever grateful to Comrade Putin for giving him the chance to take part in the special, casualty free operation.

Wasn't it Drake who asked "Is something lost if you know where it is?" and to the reply then added, "then my ship is not lost, it is simply at the bottom of the ocean"?

You are right. This looks like Russia managing the message to me. My wild guess is that the truth is nearer the Ukrainian version than the Russian one, though that may be bias on my part. I suspect the ship was lost quite quickly along with a lot of the crew. Fire on ships has never been anything but a potentially catastrophic thing. I just don’t see how you can remove the crew then put the fire out and establish a tow in a stormy sea. Could it be that the Russians are looking to keep the co-ordinates of the wreck secret so they can get any secret kit off it?

The most modern kit belonging to that ship would probably be a VHS player.

Fair point, but do they aware the west knows about video recorders and was the Russian one a top loader with thunk buttons or a front loader where the drawer jammed a lot? I suspect top loader for space saving called a Fergusonov Videostarvich.

It was a unique design commissioned especially for the military on the direct instructions of the President. To the casual observer it looks like a front loader, but is actually a secret rear loader.

I doubt there is either any secret where it sank nor chance of any western force getting to it before the Russians would do.

For any technical gear on it, but I doubt there’s anything on it that’s not known about so your point is essentially valid. That wouldn’t stop the Russians trying to hide where it sank - which I suspect was fairly close to where it was his. As with the Kursk fiasco, I suspect they’ll want to get the bodies off it if nothing else.
