Is it my imagination or are there barber shops seemingly everywhere now? Driving/waking around Ipswich and parts of Surrey the last few days and there’s no reason to not get a haircut. Barbers everywhere. Even noticed one in Tesco this morning.

As generally cash, they’re popular with criminal organisations for money laundering.

Sunday opening

It rather kills the "Something for the weekend, Sir?" question that I remember from a long time ago.

Roses, top of North St, Sudury. Grizzled hairdresser would lean in a whisper the question as he was just finishing the cut......

I was 12 at the time, but I looked younger

The Turkish barbers are great, now I have decided to have a bit of hair again I visit one fortnightly. Good for a nostril wax as well.

Try and offer them a debit card though and they look at you as if you were a madman.

Those car wash peeps must draw in a fortune, I have tried on occasion recently to take Mothers car to the one in the BP garage next to what was The Golden Key but they are usually queued onto the road.

Many next door to each other and open to 23:00 around my way.
Much like the many greengrocers next door to each other selling virtually the same products.

Surely can't all laundering, can they?

Course they are, as is any business that takes cash - according to some on here anyway.

Can't be anything to do with the banks/card processing companies that take a wedge of your cash at every opportunity, can it?

And as for laundrettes...I bet if you go in one after eleven it is nothing but a queue of drug dealers pushing the evenings takings into those horizontal slots for the coins and just washing single shirts one after the other all night.

Your point would make more sense if it wasn't for the fact that it's dearer to bank cash than take a card.

Cash is a royal pain in the arse these days - hypothetically, if you had a good stash of cash it's bloody difficult to spend it on anything legal as if you take more than £5k anywhere you run the risk of a stewards, they even have cash sniffing dogs at airports!

It's gonna be carnage with people trying to get rid of all their paper notes before September!

I can confirm the presence of cash sniffing dogs at airports, I was given the once over by one at Schipol eighteen months ago, but it was just a quick once over, it probably didn't fancy me...

There was also an episode of the French crime drama 'Spiral' that featured a dog sniffing out cash in, I think, one of those wide bits of ventilation tubing that scuzzy warehouses have hanging from the walls. Fiction, but plausible.

Who says they bank the cash? If you're predominantly a cash business, you take cash in, you spend cash on your outgoings, and you can still bank a reasonable amount of cash f-o-c to pay for monthly bills, etc.

I regularly shop in Bookers and it's normal to see people in there pay their bills (many hundreds of £s) in cash. I still get paid in cash, but probably no more than 10% of my turnover, I just use it to pay for day-to-day stuff.

Of course there will always be an element of money laundering/tax avoidance/tax evasion with cash, but I still wouldn't want to see it eradicated totally.

Just an observation re.Barber shops , I remember travelling around India in the early 2000's and discovering the delight of a barbering experience for the first time .. shave,head,massage,etc,etc...something I am sure I would have experienced a lot earlier in life in the UK if not for the AIDS epidemic which I learnt did for the trade totally in the 80's even though it was already in decline..tattoo shops likewise effected.

Town fanatic John on Felixstowe Rd (near to where Aldi is now) was also a great place. I used to take RKD there for a short back and sides.

He once got vertigo in the middle of a hair cut and left his customer with half a head of hair.
