Was speaking to him last night. He said something along the lines of 'what a cool time to be supporting Ipswich'. Not really stopped to think about it, but given I've known him 16 years, since we met in freshers week, I guess he's only ever known boring Ipswich dross since then. I mean we all have, but at least we had a few years of fun prior to that.
With the new ownership, new sense of optimism, a really tidy, diverse and balanced looking squad. He mentioned the Ed Sheeran effect saying he's seen Ipswich brand more than he had in ages specially on social media. Made me think with all the work off the pitch too, buying up the land and work to the ground, 20,000+ attendances looking the norm this season based on ST sales, 6,000 at the fan day, Fabio Wardley sporting the badge on his shorts, a young and progressive manager. Even the retros 90's nod from the home shirt. The Ipswich Town brand feels quite a cool and contemporary club at the moment.
Got me thinking, if we're now Ed Sheeran, what were we for years prior to that? largely treading water in the Championship. I would say 2017 Town under ME, MM and L O'N was a Michael Ball tribute act at Butlins.
When we look back at the ME regime and the fall out that’s all we were doing, simply ‘treading water’. I’m thankful for how it all ended, but that really was a poor and frustrating time in our club’s history, where in the main we just stagnated before eventually plummeting.
