8 day strike from today

This is a big, big deal.

Start stocking up on toilet rolls!

Wether you agree with action or not it’s safe to say industrial action is going to snowball, the cost of living crisis and the energy scandal is in all probability going to remove the conservatives from office, not a bad thing, trouble is we are all in for a very difficult time unless of course you have a few quid behind you (even if you have a modest amount of savings it will end up depleted to pay for ridiculous overpriced energy) we’ve had 15 years of governments who govern for the few, the rest of country can clearly see that now.

I wouldn’t deny anyone the right to strike.

The energy crisis is my biggest concern though. Unless there is swift government action I think quite a few people will commit suicide, I genuinely believe this. Problem is we haven’t got a functioning government at the moment.

I’m not sure people realise how much it’s going to go up in winter.

I’ve just had my monthly bill in and it was £350 but that was mainly electric - and I have gas water and central heating. Obviously the heating hasn’t been on for ages.

£350 ? How ?

I assume that's because you are paying monthly direct debit not for what you've actually used, but as part of an "annualised bill". So I assume you must be hundreds of pounds in credit at this point.

My monthly bills have yet to go above £100 this summer, OK only 2 people in a terraced house, but we're both at home all day. Gas to heat the water up and do the cooking.

I’ve just had a look and noticed it includes a mobile phone and broadband, I thought I had switched these but that was another account.

Drilled down the gas is £48 and the electric £179

That’s with a smart meter - pay what you use.

Jeepers. So mobile phone and broadband are costing £130 a month ? That seems excessive to say the least !

I take it you are with Utilities Warehouse ? That's who I'm with. Oh dear, at that rate of usage you have a hard winter coming. Best of luck.

I will look into this and report back but I’m currently tasked with purchasing a new washing line - although technically this is a pink job IMHO. Just noticed May was £455

Just had a proper look.

These are my energy usages for this August and last August.

August and September are historically my cheapest bill

My current domestic rates are half of what I have just had to enter on a new commercial property.

It's going to be very bad for consumers - especially when supermarkets are going to be clobbered by the costs or refrigeration and everything is going to keep going up and up - and up

I know this sounds daft but I'm going for thermal wear this winter.
I appreciate that I will have to put the heating on for a short while each day to prevent damp. I won't be putting the heating on to warm myself.
Microwaving a cheap convenience meal seems to use less energy than the oven so I'm going to rely on those a lot more.
I used to give £10 to 3 charities but I've had to cancel to save £30.
I have a company pension on top of my state pension so I'm way better off than my women friends of my age who don't even get a full state pension.
We've all agreed to help each other if times get tough which is what I guess most people are doing.
I'm hoping that this Project Fear (energy bills) turns out to be less of a problem than some of the headlines would have us believe.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Also double-check you're meter readings aren't estimated. Smart meters aren't as smart as the name suggests and a lot of people have suddenly noticed when they were forced (or their choice) to move to another supplier they've not been able to obtain the precise reading and it's estimated for 4 or 5 months.

Thanks for the tip - but I’ve called them twice this month and they’re all working from home - the first occasion the bloke was trying to stop his dog barking and the second time the bloke couldn’t answer my question and had no line manager to ask.

Bunch of arse!

Ha ha.

I was right though.

I think they have reformulated the new stuff on the shelves so it’s not the same.

Also - pitta breads, although we may have just solved this - having said that I did end up with a whole meal pitta substitute the other week with my doner.

we are saved

Johnson or Truss "reportedly want family doctors to assess whether sick or elderly people need a discount heating their homes"

Firstly there si no discount it would be what Truss dismisses as a 'handout'..

Secondly doctors are under so much pressure, who thinks adding more regulation' to their day (processing these claims) is a good idea ? It is bad enough that UK exporters now have to fill in an extra 4 million forms per week, and Universal Credit claimants are subject to long delay and constant form filling without this lunacy.

Job Seekers Allowance is £77 a week. Where is the surplus from that to pay extra costs and higher food bills. Those with no close family support will merely 'slip away' . Thousands will be added to the NHS burden through malnutrition and hypothermia - or simply suicide (Lucan, above).

Just as Covid removed tens of thousands of 'useless mouths' so will the cost of fuel.

Snowballing or inevitable thanks to the persistence of this Government to under-invest in public services.

Teachers have been offered a 5% pay rise (on average). Inflation is double digits at 11.8+. Over the past decade, compared to inflation, many teacher's pay has been effectively cut by 20%. That is one fifth in 10 years!

On top of this, there is a recruitment and retention crisis which increases workload. But to cap it all, the Government is going to pay nothing to schools to fund the 5% rise so this will have to come out of school budgets.

Enough is enough. Pay Up! Teachers deserve better. Value education, value educators.

Yes, they do.

As this country becomes more insular due to the 52%, we need to rely on the youth for any future success.

I do private contract work for Ministry of Justice and the increase pushed on to us was 3% and a token payment of £150. Absolutely farcical and as we work within the criminal justice system, we are unable to strike.

The cost of refrigeration is already having an effect here in Spain, bars and restaurants can't afford to store ice because of the electric costs, so they send out waiters to buy ice from supermarkets every day. So now there is a massive shortage and restrictions to buy ice as a resident or for tourists, first world problems i know, but the sign of thngs to come

In relation to funding, I read that academies are considering 3 or 4 day weeks due to increased energy costs.

“Enough is enough” That reminds me of the campaign new labour pushed in 96, very different times with no social media but I do believe something similar is desperately needed to really get some momentum in the publics mind in getting this lot out asap.

Unite are spoiling for a fight and have targeted key sectors. Feel sorry for their members at Felixstowe who are being used as pawns. They were asked to vote on strike action without being given an opportunity to even consider the offer made.

Apart from part of the offer being a one off payment the offer isn’t unreasonable. Lower earners getting a higher offer.

The biggest problem is Sunak’s decision to freeze tax allowances.

Not necessarily the same area/roles, but Prison Officers can't strike. Instead they stage a walkout where they leave the absolute minimum of staff on the wings and all picket outside the gate. They stay on the perimeter so they can respond in an urgent situation, but in reality the prison is effectively shut down with minimum movement for prisoners.

My wife is office based in the Prison Service and when walkouts occur they get roped in to doing tasks, last time she had to deliver food to cells as they couldn't let prisoners out of their cells to go to the canteen. Walkout barely lasted a day when the government caved in (they wanted a form of pepper spray for protection).
