I shat myself a few hours ago. Metaphorically. I was reading your enlightening and erudite missives when I heard a crashing sound from the kitchen so elongated and cacophonous that I thought the ceiling had caved in or a bus had gone through the wall. Which would've been an achievement on the 1st floor.
A kitchen cabinet (already here when we moved in, so I can't be blamed) full of cups and glasses, decided enough was enough and separated itself from the wall. To add to the carnage it landed on our two-tier, and fully full, dishrack. Absolutely terrifying, and it took me an hour to clean up the broken class and porcelain.
All our plates and wine glasses are gone. When Lady Dollers gets home she'll be eating off the breadboard, and myself out of a frying pan.
Interesting to note that my ITFC mug sat resplendent amidst the carnage, untouched. Like a beacon of hope in a war zone. I like to think it's a metaphor for McKenna's unbeaten, unshakeable, blues.
I'm not sure Lady Dollers will see it that way.

After plopping your McDonalds quarter pounder with cheese, medium fries and a lava apple pie bag on the table, you reached for a glass for some water, the world spun a bit, you keeled against the cabinet and down it came.
Far more plausible.

Best check rest of the cabinets. Fair to assume they were all put up at the same time with same fixtures etc on same walls? Don’t wish to be alarming but what happened isn’t “normal” but could be a sign of damp in the wall (or at least area around fixings). Good luck, hopefully nothing more sinister

I leapt out of bed and ran outside wondering what the hell was going on.
Turned out to be the highest shelf in the fridge. Made a right mess.
Not surprising when I looked at all the stuff I'd crammed in there without a thought to how it might cope.

I had a similar experience many years ago on a boat on the Broads. Tied the boat up at a jetty outside a pub, had a few beers and fell into bed. Was woken up about 3am by crashing and smashing and my first thought was we'd been hit by another boat. Got out of bed and realized the floor was no longer level. Went to the kitchen and it was full of smashed plates, glasses and all kinds of stuff.
Nobody had told us the river was tidal and not to tie the boat up tight. During the night, the tide rose, the boat got wedged under the jetty and was slowly being pushed onto its side. All the cupboards opened.
We didn't get our deposit back. We also lost the anchor when somebody threw it over the side but forgot to tie it to the boat first. They didn't notice the missing anchor thanks to the carnage of the kitchen.

I broke a shelf in my fridge and had a scattering of yogurt covered items to pick up and clean all over the floor.
You almost sunk someone's boat.
I think you're giving my anecdote a bit too much credit when you call the two cases similar!

That was the only cabinet. And no, we had a survey done that showed no damp. That cabinet was on the same side as the washing machine... I think the combination of a badly put up cabinet and the shaking of the washing machine is what eventually brought it down.
