He lives in Sussex I believe. He can get the train to London Victoria. The walk along Victoria Street to Westminster Abbey will do him good. If needs to pop over to Buck House, it's a pleasant stroll across St James' Park.

Whilst in the park he can admire the spot near the Foreign Office where I took my first unaided steps as young Factual in late 1956/early 1957*.

*No, not BCE.

"exceptional hardship".

Pfft. I'm sure he can afford a driver.

I don't understand this at all. He's not going to be owning an old car so it definitely has Bluetooth built-in. There can be no reason to use the phone by hand.

He should also be sacked for stupidity.

You're making the mistake of thinking that the hereditary Earl Marshal actually does any of the real work in organising something like this.

100% agree with your first three paragraphs.

I suspect that it is arrogance more than stupidity and I don't believe he should be sacked for this. However, as per the OP, it is refreshing and pleasing that the appropriate punishment has been dished out. A ridiculous (and arrogant) attempt to avoid it. Effectively "I am too important for the rules to apply to me". Cummings, Johnson, Truss and co should never have been and nor should he be. Perhaps the times are a changing.

He is the "highest ranked Duke in England".
Maybe he should be put in the relegation zone.

Can’t believe that. He must be behind Ellington at least, even if he was crap by the time he came to us.

Sh1t driver, he's just a sh1t driver!

1. How old is his car? Bluetooth connection a staple of any car's kit for over a decade now, esp. NOW

2. Even if an old classic there are after market Bluetooth solutions from kit fitted to car to let tired to ear

3. Ran a red light

4. I thought once you got to court fines are income related?

5. If he is hard up Chauffeur companies offer driver only services i.e. You get driven in your own car.

I think arrogance is on of the qualifications of the job - and anyone who gets himself up in some comic opera clobber takes himself far too seriously

1. It was two offences, jumping a red light and using a phone when driving. The latter carries a six point find. So was he let off the jumping a red light ?

2. This is not a 'one off', the tosser already has three speeding tickets. Which suggests he takes this stuff lightly

3. The points total should put him on 18 points, meaning he should start with 6 points after the ban.

4. He employed a top lawyer because he thought he could get away with it, and the likelihood is others of his type have " just say xyz, old boy"

5. This sort of stuff goes on all the time, and is not reported as not every one is High Panjandrum of the Serpentine boating lake. Magistrates are drawn from a very narrow social group, so see that 'one of their own' is not needing to be punished to keep them in order

Often the case does not even come to court, especially in rural areas where there is just the one plod - who will know his place

ahead of the Duke of Wessex, Cambridge, Sussex? Im just assuming the Duke of York is out of this contest at the moment.

but there you go the Grauniads report claimed he was a descendent of Elizabeth I as well, which surprised alot of historians.

The link is the BBC though so not really much connection to the Guardian there to concern yourself with.

A quick Google throws up this:

"Besides the dukedoms of Cornwall and Lancaster, the oldest extant title is that of Duke of Norfolk, dating from 1483 (the title was first created in 1397). The Duke of Norfolk is considered the premier duke of England."

So he is considered the premier duke of England. Interesting. I have no idea how that works but that's what it says.

Sounds as if they are ranked by longevity of the title. Rather like saying Sheffield FC are England's top football club. I did know a Duke was supposedly the top ranked peerage.
All men are supposed to be equal under the law, but it's long been a fact that rich men can buy themselves a different type of justice through employing expensive lawyers, such as the notorious "Mr Loophole" used by footballers & other celebrities.

He claimed that he needed to keep his DL in order to be able to manage the (infrequent) task of arranging the coronation.

Can we assume that he will step aside since, presumably, he will now be unable to perform the onerous duty?

The honourable thing would be to take a back seat ….which is where he should have been if he wanted to use his mobile.
