One of the PMs Special Advisers has been suspended on 13:58 - Oct 19 with 1555 views | GlasgowBlue | Apparently, the threshold has been passed for number of letters to trigger a leadership election. However, as the rules state she can't be challenged for a full calendar year, Sir Graham Brady is saying that he will hold an election if the number of letters recived suprpasses 50% of the parliamentary Tory party. So that's 179. I did read that it had reached 100.

It's not going to happen. She might be persuaded to resign of course, but I cannot see any forcing her out at least until the year has passed, and in any case I think it would be a big mistake (as was forcing out Boris, which I think is now obvious).

It shows you what a ridiculous position we are in when the Tory leadership rules don't account for it because they never expected a replacement PM to be quite so rubbish. It's a bit ridiculous that the bar is so much higher to get her removed than Boris though. SB

Removing a PM because he's a liar who has contempt for the country and doesn't think the rules apply to him is not a mistake. The "something worse" argument is annoying. The issue here is that the Tory membership can't be trusted and shouldn't be allowed to select a PM for the entire country. Direct your ire at the ridiculousness of that process and the ridiculousness of their views. SB

So imagine the scenario: Conservative MPs come up with a plan to give LT the boot and replace with one candidate that most of them can unite behind, to avoid a contest (Hunt or Rishi, likely). BJ throws his hat in the ring 'last minute' - knowing full well members will choose him. The MPs might avoid this of course, by finding a third candidate so they can then make sure Bozza isn't in the final two. All this requires a high level of unity among Conservative MPs of course, which is rarely seen.

It may well have been a big mistake to remove Boris for Tory supporters, but not for people who care about decency in public life. Why would removing Truss be a mistake out of interest? Do you mean in Tory staying in power terms or in terms of whats best for the country?

I really meant it was a mistake from a political perspective, rather than a 'what's best for the country' or moral correctness. I think in most situations it is a mistake to sack your leader while they are a serving PM with a majority. The electorate knew what they were getting in 2019, it was priced in.

Although the Labour rules for electing their leader give even more power to party members & that's what produced the near unelectable Corbyn.

Labour rules make it a lot harder to sack the leader. Conservative rules make it far too easy!

That'll be why the tories' poll ratings fell off a cliff when partygate emerged? What was it, 60 ministerial resignations all saying he wasn't fit to hold the office? Edit: typo. [Post edited 19 Oct 2022 14:26]

Slightly different, they weren't the sitting government so they can pretty much do what they want with regards to electing a leader. The Tory membership were giving us a new PM with a completely different set of ideas and absolutely no mandate to implement them. SB

Fell of a cliff = about 5 points behind Labour. They are now 30 points behind. Most of those 60 resignees were quite comfortable with his fitness right up until headlines and polls started to turn.

You lot had an 80 seat majority. That's the the politics equivalent of losing 5-4 when you were 4-0 up on 60 minutes after conceding 5 OGs. In all fairness, that's not 'fall off a cliff', that's 'publicly shat yourself', though. [Post edited 19 Oct 2022 15:59]

I see you're hiding behind a new avatar - I'll let that pass. The Prime minister is the person who has the support of a majority of MP's. That's the bar you have to get above. "No, I haven't got a majority of MP's who support me but I have a note from the membership." doesn't wash. I don't think the membership should be involved in Tory or Labour selection processes for PM. That way lies madness. You end up with Truss and Corbyn if they are involved.
