Fizzled out Careers 15:09 - Jan 5 with 2738 views | BlueandTruesince82 | See Man U are close to signing Jack Butland as their reserve keeper from Palace. Once thought of as a potential long term England Custodian barley played since he left Stoke and now kicking around as a 2nd choice and seems quite happy to do so. Got me thinking about careers that fizzled out after initial hype. Any others?

Fizzled out Careers on 15:19 - Jan 5 with 2310 views | itfcsuth | How many do you want...? The list is almost endless at all ends of the spectrum really. Regarding Butland, his biggest blunder was not moving back to the PL from Stoke when they were relegated. You see Ramsdale at Bournemouth when they were relegated, back up to Arsenal and hasn't really looked back, but he could have easily become another 'Butland'.
Fizzled out Careers on 15:21 - Jan 5 with 2288 views | ITFC_Forever | Didn't Butland get a really bad injury, just as he was really making a name for himself? And then when he got fit, Stoke got relegated very soon after?

Fizzled out Careers on 15:22 - Jan 5 with 2275 views | itfcsuth | Jack Rodwell is an obvious one. Dele Alli is rapidly becoming one of the craziest declines in recent history.
Fizzled out Careers on 15:24 - Jan 5 with 2251 views | clive_baker | Dele Alli has to be up there. Gone from the England squad at the 2018 world cup and starting the 2019 Champions League final to looking like a complete flop at Besiktas. Mason Greenwood is another. Regardless of what happens in his trial this year I think his career is toast. There's plenty of examples of players who haven't fulfilled their earlier promise. What I want to know is who are the next ones? Prediction time...

I think he wanted to leave, just Stoke were demanding too much money. As others have said there are loads - Dele Alli is a perfect example, Ross Barkley too

Good shout that, as is Rodwell below. Ravel Morrison and maybe Nile Ranger but not sure his career ever got going in the first place

Ross Barkley is known for enjoying the lifestyle isn't he. Used to be found pi$$Ed up in London bars quite often, currently at Nice where I'm not sure he set things alight

Wickham closer to home. Not to mention Priskin. Most Ipswich Town managers this century have seen their careers nose dive after coming here.

Dele decline is actually quite tragic. Continuing the spurs theme… David Bentley was a 15m flop.

Ridiculous. Played for Arsenal then had a good career in the premier league at Everton. Isn’t he still 5th choice at Citeh?!

I'm not sure that's entirely fair. He was content to sit on the bench at Man City but that wasn't until he was 35 or so. His first stint at Ipswich was a story of his stature building over a number of years, culminating in a very successful Premier League season and England call up. He then went to Arsenal, and although he did play the majority of games, he played a dozen and won the league. He made over 100 premier league appearances in all. It's certainly true that he didn't go on to hit the heights on a consistent basis that his promise indicated he might, but I don't think his was an especially notable fall from grace. At Ipswich he achieved a "high" of getting into the prem, finishing in the European places, and playing for England. At Arsenal there was a new high of winning the league (and playing almost as many games across the whole season as David Seaman). At Everton he achieved a new high of being the number one in an established premier league team, but it was of course a step down in terms of size of club. Then there were relatively gentle stepping stones back to the 2nd tier. A fizzle, yes, but more of a slow puncture than some others like Dele Alli, whose fall from grace has been fairly vertiginous.
Fizzled out Careers on 16:18 - Jan 5 with 1804 views | RobTheMonk | As much as it pains me to say as I knew him when he was a kid, but Josh McEachran was the business as a teenager. Now at MK Dons. Still only 29.
Fizzled out Careers on 17:27 - Jan 5 with 1514 views | Hipsterectomy | Lewis Price played 150 times. 68 were with us over 4 years and 6 on loan from us. He then played another 75 times or so over the next 13 years. Weirdly he played 11 times for Wales I remember him always being signed by Champ/Prem clubs to be number 2 or 3 [Post edited 5 Jan 2023 17:27]
