The excellent Blue Monday pre-Plymouth podcast - raised an interesting question? 10:56 - Jan 13 with 2015 viewsunstableblue

What was the last game at PR that matched the importance and scale of this Plymouth game?!??!

(or words to that effect)

I agree with BM guys that I don't think there has been any even close in our League One campaigns to date. I think the relegation season under the hapless Cook/Lambert was a whimper of an exit so no specific game - Coventry at home perhaps? We did have a Norwich derby under Hurst which was 1-1? and there was some hope in the fan base at that time. But again not close to this Plymouth encounter.

Mick's football was sh!te for several seasons towards the end of his reign (attendance plummeting), but I guess for me the last BIG game was the Ipswich v Norwich play-off first leg, in the Murphy wunder season, under Mick. The manager and players had done bloody well to get us into the play-offs, it was our local rivals, and it was a pretty rabid atmosphere.

So for me its that game? (despite us not being a match for their players/system)

Would you agree or have I missed a game?

I said similar yesterday when some of us were talking in the Zoom ahead of the press conference, biggest big game for a while. A long time since I can remember similar anticipation and expectation ahead of a match.

Forest in 2015 probably.

West Ham at Portman Road play offs . We let them score a soft goal in the first 2-3 mins . Game effectively over , and they’d made a late rush into play offs that season . We were something like 11 points ahead and we bloody cocked it up !!

A minor shout for Plymouth last season, I missed it due to covid but it felt like I was missing something significant. This is far bigger though.

I think Rotherham in early 2019 was probably seen as similarly pivotal at the time, although for different reasons. A tense, nervy game but one we really dug in for - on and off the pitch.

Before that, Garv is almost right about Forest in April 2015. Another game we had to dig in to win late on. 28,000 or so in that day I think. And then there was the other game a fortnight after that which, despite the second leg, was the best day of watching football in the town since the Burley years.

No there’s been nothing since the home play off vs Norwich. I remember the crowd noise when we got a corner just after equalising - a visceral roar that we’ve seldom heard from a home crowd. IIRC Cole Skuse (?) made reference to it in an interview, which just goes to show how rare it was/is.

Just hope the players are up for it.

Time for a statement win that this is our season and no one is going to stop us doing it.

I disagree. We were top at this stage two seasons ago and went into a run of games against 2nd, 3rd and 4th (Sunderland, Rotherham, Posh in no particular order).

So it's our biggest game since January 2020.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

How you feeling about our chances Phil?

I think if the majority of Town players turn up, they follow McKenna instruction, and the town fans make it intimidating - we win.

But Plymouth are a bloody good team, it’s a club who have had an excellent technical director in place and implementing a strategy for some time. Good manager, good players, and real momentum.

It’s a shame that this season we have Plymouth reaching peak performance and Sheffield Weds with such a strong squad. Tougher this season than last - despite how Rotherham smashed last season.

Too many Town fans thinking we are entitled to go up due to spend, but it’s a weaker squad than Weds, and our project is behind Plymouth.

Can’t wait for tomorrow just hope players can generate some early threat,,, think the roof will come off if so!

I'm confident. Think we're better against teams which try and play football against us and thought we probably should have won at Home Park on the balance of the game. In addition, Plymouth aren't quite the force away as they are at home and are missing a couple of key players in Edwards and Whittaker.

wouldn't surprise me if they go in front and we claw it back in the 2nd half with the new signings making an impact from the bench lifting the team.

There haven't been many with the potential to elicit a mighty roar of confidence or a wail of despair for quite a while, probably not since that playoff game although there have been biggish 'tests' in League One which we've generally failed and obviously ended up nowhere near a position to have a proper match like this.

That said I don't think it would be the end of the world even if we lost tomorrow but it would certainly affect fan confidence and give Wednesday the opportunity to kick us more firmly into 3rd. Much the same way that a win wouldn't suddenly mean we're heading straight for the top (could still be 2 points off 2nd at the end of the day) but would set us up very nicely for what you have to say is a very favourable run of fixtures before the Sheffield Wednesday game.

Personally speaking anyway I'm not sure I've had so much nervous anticipation for a match for quite some time.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Exactly my thoughts! They did shut up shop at Bolton last week which does make me wonder if they'll try and do the same for this game

I thought it was harsh to lose at Plymouth. We had much the better of the play, but they were incredibly clinical and from distance - and their fans fired up once they’d scored and that turned the game. Losing Whittaker perhaps reduces that striking potency.

Please note Town fans that it was the Plymouth fans who played a huge part in securing that home win!!

In the grand scheme of things this is one game that will neither see us out of contention or increase our chance of promotion by a huge amount. But to lose would give Plymouth a ten point cushion and currently I can't see Wednesday losing many. We as a team are obviously 1st, 2nd or 3rd best in this league. We won't know until the season is over. The problem with finishing third is obviously the dreaded playoffs which as we know is a lottery. Many teams have finished sixth and got promoted. So therefore I want us to be top two. Doesn't bother me one iota finishing second as next season would all be about recruitment.

Whilst I agree the result won't define the season, and I won't be throwing my toys out of the pram at 5pm if we draw or lose - as Plymouth are further along on their journey, see last season, see Technical Director of quality in place for some seasons

BUT, its the momentum it will provide a winner of this game. We need a RUN, end of story. And to beat our rivals would boost the players and fan base.

I'm convince the Charlton result has effected our season already... fan base and team.

Anyway its going to be bloody exciting - and everyone in the ground has a role to play. If the crowd is nervy not intimidating to Plymouth, we will have let ourselves down.

I think the Town fans react very well to waves of attack.. we tend to build a bit of a crescendo... but almost need to be a goal to the good... there was a corner on Boxing day when we were in the lead in front of the North Stand... and it really was very loud and passionate

One of the loudest atmospheres I heard was under burley.

George Burleys blue white army.... it went on for about 5 minutes. Every stand was clapping. It was brilliant.

The Burley years was a project, incremental improvement, towards a common goal, where the fans could see progress through each season, believed in the manager and the club.. and critically the football was on the ground, passing based, with pace and with waves of attack.

I agree at times Portman Road was rocking as one.. everyone invested.

That was nearly 25 years ago! this McKenna era is the closest we've been to that.

And we need to trust in the process and the project. Believe in it. And BACK it with loud support.

The Marcus years were not right at all.

Attending games was amazing back then. North stand v churchman. Rob chandler competitions on who could sing louder. Then the pioneer stand joined in with boos from the north.

I wouldnt be so sure Plymouth will try to play that much football, especially initially. The manger changes styles and formation frequently and they now have a large squad. I reckon they know what we perform best against and will set up to stifle in the first instance.
