For me, it's just an old tradition which doesn't mean much to me, but I'm happy enough that it's there. It doesn't need to be better or jazzier or more inspiring or sung by someone who looks and sounds like they're having their teeth pulled out whilst they're singing it. It's just a trusty old thing that I accept for what it is. It's not made of plastic and bling. It's fine.

And of course it's not the English national anthem, it's the UK national anthem. Would be good if it were replaced by Jerusalem or Land of Hope & Glory but any such move would be so controversial that it would be doomed to failure. We'll only change it when we become a republic, which sadly won't happen in my lifetime.

If we ever wanted to change it to a more jauntier tune I've always thought "Heart of Oak" (anthem of the Royal Navy) would be a perfect choice.

I had never heard of it and so googled it and it’s a fine uplifting piece. But if we want to strike terror into the hearts of the opposition then I think this is ideal.
