The incumbent President always runs as the 'Safe pair of hands'.
He has been a steady hand as regards the main bug bears ie. economy, defence, crime, immigration but the right-wing media says the opposite. despite the data/facts.
If he's running against Drumpf then there's no worry 'cos there are so many never-Trumpers amongst the independent voters that he'll easily win the popular vote.
However the GOP has gerrymandered the red states and a few swing states where they have a GOP state senate/Governor and have enacted voting laws that disenfranchise the democratic voter.
It's unclear if the shenanigans of the GOP states will give Drumpf the Presidency but that's what they are designed to do.
