Liverpool gets it on 17:54 - May 6 with 3069 views | nodge_blue | I'm not even sure what they are booing. Is it a reference to the 1980s when half the crowd probably weren't even born. Or is it two fingers to the rest of England? Either way love is all we need was a better noise that came out of Liverpool

Think it's more embarrassing to pledge allegiance to that family, but to each their own.

Indeed. If you go back in time and look at Liverpool away ends in Europe you’ll actually see plenty of Union Flags. Also a good amount of Scousers on some of the Italian 90s documentaries as well following England. It is this new breed of self entitlement about a past that half weren’t even born in. I want to be the edgy villain because it will be plastered all over social media. I am sure they loved the reaction they got at community shield doing the same thing. Liverpool would have been involved in plenty of games where the anthem was played (cup finals and such) and it didn’t used to happen, not that I can recall. All this while enjoying the benefits of living in a country where even during such a cost of living crisis the same fans can afford to go and watch live football match in the most expensive league in the world. Just a bit pathetic really, glad they seem to be out of the race for our future England captain.

It's crap. As a republican atheist how about giving us an anthem for all? While we're on the subject, an English anthem would also be nice for English events such as international matches.

They’re wonderfully irreverent, because they know that authority works against us all and they don’t swallow the propaganda pumped out by some parts of the gutter press. (I’m assuming they booed the anthem; I didn’t see it).

Very few national anthems get changed do they but if that comes up for debate then fine. Whatever people’s thoughts and views are of the RF, I personally don’t agree with doing that.

It's not a national anthem, it is a monarchist anthem. It celebrates the monarch and the monarch alone, not the nation. Verse six, of course, does mention crushing some of the people of the nation.

It’s the damn system holding us all down, with our Premier League season tickets, replica 2023 shirts and multiple European away trips a year.

That’s surely far too aggressive for people these days. If we can’t handle Land & Hope & Glory surely the blood and guts of the French anthem is a little inappropriate! Even if it’s just the tune.

Liverpool is a great place and so are its people. Over the last 40 years, it has, more than any other place in the UK, borne the brunt of false stereotypes in papers like the Sun, stereotypes which have entered public consciousness. It has also suffered the injustices of Hillsborough. All of this has made many people in the city suspicious of, and hostile to, the establishment. Throw in a sizeable population of Irish descent, and the reaction of what is after all a football crowd to the national anthem is not surprising or, in my view, to be condemned. It is after all a free country. [Post edited 6 May 2023 18:29]

You real failed to address a lot of the points. Strange it has only just started happening and didn’t occur nearer all these said event. Booing the anthem of your own country is just a bit sad/weird really. Everton didn’t do it recently either.

You are talking daft la Salt of the earth, great sense of humour. Liverpudlians have been picked on for decades through no fault of their own. I would absolutely love to live in that crime free utopia.

that's why i said the tune! the tune isn't aggressive, it's also not a drab dirge like gstk... no reason why we can't borrow a tune and change the lyrics, liechtenstein use gstk, and germany did until the end of the first world war
