Liverpool gets it on 18:32 - May 6 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | You real failed to address a lot of the points. Strange it has only just started happening and didn’t occur nearer all these said event. Booing the anthem of your own country is just a bit sad/weird really. Everton didn’t do it recently either. |
It hasn't only just started though. There were riots in 81 and Hillsborough enforced the hatred of the establishment.

It’s not recent. They’ve been anti-establishment for over 40 years though, ever since they were sold down the river by Thatcher’s government. The national anthem is one of the few opportunities they have at a football match to show that anger.

Well, Flower of Scotland is all about crushing the English so honours even on the crushing front. The National Anthem is actually a prayer. Personally, I think it’s a dirge with wording I don’t like and would replace it tomorrow. But I’d never boo it. Contradictory? Yep.

Liverpool gets it on 17:54 - May 6 by nodge_blue | I'm not even sure what they are booing. Is it a reference to the 1980s when half the crowd probably weren't even born. Or is it two fingers to the rest of England? Either way love is all we need was a better noise that came out of Liverpool |
Or is it the billionaire riding through London in a gold carriage at his new hat ceremony, juxtaposed with their own lived reality? BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The booing is fairly recent. I think what gets me a bit is not the booing of the government etc, it's that it's we are Liverpool first. We aren't part of England. We don't support the national team. It is a bit of two fingers to the rest of us. Not exactly socially inclusive to the rest of the country and then expecting the rest of the county to say oh good old Liverpool. And I do like the city and the people. They are my second team as such and I occasionally go. What exactly do they want though? In recent years Liverpool has not been hard done by. Hillsborough has been properly investigated. I know these things burn deep and I do get that. But we all need reconciliation. This division I just find so tiring. In many things. And consequently I'd rather just sing we've got super kieron McKenna in a trance.

Didn’t a Labour council recently bestow the freedom of the city to Michael Heseltine?

Exactly, they didn’t boo the anthem in cup finals in the 90s. Their away ends had lots of Union flags throughout the 80s and maybe even more recently than that. A lot of them still followed England as well. Just more an observation than anything but it doesn’t quite add up. Is whatever party that is a power a reason to boo the anthem and not follow your national team? Their club captain starts for England. Social media and the mentality of people nowadays probably has a lot to do with, got to hold onto the narrative. Even if you’re doing well in a city which is by all accounts quite nice to live in these days.

The national anthem calls on a christian god to save the house of saxe-coburg-gotha - The nation and the monarchy are not equivelents - The nation and religous preference are not equivelents - The national anthem is not representative - The national anthem is not beyond criticism - The national anthem is not beyond reform. If they, the monarchy and ruling classes, insist on trying to leverage domestic sporting events to spread their propaganda, then they should take the push-back and criticism.

It isn't about crushing the English, it's about seeing off an English attempt to conquer Scotland in what is known as the First War of Scottish Independence. The First War of Scottish Independence was the first of a series of wars between English and Scottish forces. It lasted from the English invasion of Scotland in 1296 until the de jure restoration of Scottish independence with the Treaty of Edinburgh—Northampton in 1328, which followed the Battle of Bannockburn which the song was about. The reference to Proud Edward's army in my view doesn't make it anti-English, and the song merely states he was sent "homeward tae think again". In effect, the song expresses a romantic yearning for the return of Scottish independence. EDIT: Of course, I wouldn't expect anyone English to know anything about Scottish history, but the interesting thing is that Scottish history or even literature was never taught in schools in Scotland when my parents were growing up. Hopefully, this has changed in recent years. [Post edited 6 May 2023 19:25]

Yep, a bit too many false stereotypes about everyone in Liverpool on this thread for my liking, but then that's par for the course for Liverpool. [Post edited 6 May 2023 19:35]

Liverpool gets it on 18:09 - May 6 by Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Indeed. If you go back in time and look at Liverpool away ends in Europe you’ll actually see plenty of Union Flags. Also a good amount of Scousers on some of the Italian 90s documentaries as well following England. It is this new breed of self entitlement about a past that half weren’t even born in. I want to be the edgy villain because it will be plastered all over social media. I am sure they loved the reaction they got at community shield doing the same thing. Liverpool would have been involved in plenty of games where the anthem was played (cup finals and such) and it didn’t used to happen, not that I can recall. All this while enjoying the benefits of living in a country where even during such a cost of living crisis the same fans can afford to go and watch live football match in the most expensive league in the world. Just a bit pathetic really, glad they seem to be out of the race for our future England captain. |
Nonsense. Besides, what on earth would it have to do with self-entitlement? Or your income?
