Player of the year. 10:27 - May 13 with 2743 views | blueislander | I didn’t realise that Frank Thyssen is the only Town player to have won this award. In the year we won the 1st Divisiion they gave it to Danny Blanchflower. Scandalous!

Player of the year. on 10:39 - May 13 with 2636 views | farkenhell | Town players won all three end of season awards that year (voted by players, managers and football writers). Warkie won one of them, can't remember who won the other (Mills?) Remember though that Villa won the league that year.

I was talking about Lucan's 2nd para. If it helps, don't worry I can't spell Tyson either. That's why I always call him Kaiser Frans!

Ah, wow - thanks for digging that one out. Top three players form little old Ipswich! Stunning - and I think we just took it all in our stride in those days. We were so consistently good we just accepted it as normal! TWTD.

Thanks, that could well be what I was thinking of. Was there also an award that the League managers voted for, which we also won? Or did I dream about that one!

I think there were only two awards. For the Football Writers' award we had the top three, as mentioned above, with Frans Thijssen the winner. For the Players' Player award we had three of the top six (who weren't put in order), Frans Thyssen, Paul Mariner and John Wark, with John Wark the winner. But we did have four players in the Football Writers' team of the year, Russell Osman, Paul Mariner, Frans Thyssen and John Wark. The fact that we had so many players featured showed the regard our team at that time had, especially amongst journalists. It also explains the regard many people in the know still have for Ipswich. And it makes a complete nonsense of the argument that Norwich are a bigger club than Ipswich. [Post edited 13 May 2023 14:23]

What an excellent video. My favourite bit in the clip of Ipswich highlights is when Arnold Muhren sells that Man Utd player a dummy. Also, they could have put Stanley Rous on a table nearer the stage given that he was 85, and presenting the main award!

I didn't watch the video long enough because for the Players' Player award we also had the top three.

I think this was a recognition of how important he was to the team, even though he was overshadowed by the rest of the team, all of whom were internationals. His penalty saving record was second to none.

He won Championship Player of the Year rather than the more prestigious ‘Player of the Year’.
