NHS recruitment plan 14:42 - Jun 30 with 1617 viewsnoggin

Just heard they are planning to reduce the time it takes to train doctors and nurses. Sounds reassuring.

Given the amount of people who no longer trust 'experts', 'scientists' etc. I can't really see an issue.

A bit of intensive education and experience might be a good thing. Vets can treat every animal on earth (and people) after five years. The same time that doctors need to treat one species that can actually tell you what’s wrong with them - and dentists need to treat 32 teeth.

The Tories love things like this. Help the economy by raising speed limits and letting people park on double yellows for 15 minutes to go shopping. They have had some bat sh1t proposals.

Truly impaired.

Wouldn't the best way be to train everyone to be a doctor, so that they can look after themselves and we can get rid of hospitals?

But what about the 50 new hospitals they just built?

Too right. Expecting doctors and nurses to look after people is the very epitome of the nanny state.

As it's a fifteen year plan, this shower won't be in charge. They can promise what they like in the knowledge they won't be around to get the blame for the initiative failing.

Given no other country is planning to reduce the amount of time needed, I wonder why the Tories are proposing this.

And where will it leave those trained in the UK who might want to practice abroad ?

I suspect this will go the way of John Major's cones hotline or Thatchers football membership scheme.

All very much on the lines of Alan Partridges monkey tennis, and Youth Hosteling with Chris Eubank.

Futile attempts to deal with the inevitable.

And we could train people to be care workers, so they could look after themselves rather than moving into a care home.

It might be possible to condense the hours spent at medical school into 4 years but the real problem is that there aren't enough clinical academic staff to deal with expansion of numbers and doctors who supervise postgraduate students as they progress through specialty training are leaving in droves. It's like trying to fill a leaking bucket. Telling the profession that you're going to ignore the independent pay review body won't help with retention. To borrow a footballing term the government has lost the dressing room.

The root of the problem with regard to staffing appears to be the lack of planning and short-sighted cuts to medical and nurse training in the early years of the coalition as part of austerity.

The following passage from the following article about the damage of austerity more generally indicates the problem.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2020/mar/03/lost-decade-hidden-story-how-aus

"One service always in the public eye was the NHS. But its 2010 training cuts left it short of 100,000 nurses and doctors. Spending time with the chief executive of Ipswich hospital, we watched as he begged a senior nurse not to leave. Jenny (not her real name), one of his best, brightest and most dedicated nurses, had turned around his difficult chemotherapy ward, caring for seriously ill people feeling at their worst, where deaths of patients exacted a heavy emotional toll on staff. But, taking a deep breath, she told him: “I just can’t keep going.” She would join the nursing bank for occasional shifts, but her departure would add to the 41,000 nurse vacancies. Her team cried when she told them."

Why bother with any training? Plenty of stuff on the internet and most people have kitchen knives, Stanley knives, a mallet and a needle and thread. How hard can it be?

The government has ‘had enough of experts’ so let’s not waste money on training anybody for anything. Yep, should save a few pennies.

It’s pathetic.
