If England lose 21:10 - Jul 13 with 4645 viewsgtsb1966

how peed off will you be. When we lost the 1990 World Cup semi final I was 24 and totally gutted. I didn't buy a newspaper for a few days nor watch the news. Thankfully the Internet wasn't a thing then. When we lost the the last world cup semi and Euro final I found myself peed off for a couple of hours but fine by the morning. I'll be the same tomorrow if the worse happens. Ipswich lose a game though I'm peed off all weekend. Is anyone else the same. Is it an age thing?

It’ll be disappointing but we have to put it into context in that at least we’ll have gone the distance in another tournament, and we won’t be losing to Germany or France. We’ve got a decent chance though so let’s enjoy. Euros and particularly world cups tend to mark the lifetime of football fans, we pretty much know what phase we were in at each one. I too was born in 66 and was also 24 in 1990. The run in 2018 was good, but 1990 was epic. But then it’s because that was my generation of players I suppose. All the world cups up to that point wee huge events to me but afterwards whilst I enjoy them they haven’t been quite so impactful.

I’m a similar age, was 21 in 1990. I remember crying when we lost that shootout. Would be mildly upset if we lose tomorrow, but I’ll be over it in five minutes. An age thing, plus a lifetime of disappointment from England kind of prepares you for it.
Ipswich have ripped up all the rules in the last couple of years, and I’m still not quite sure it’s real!

I'll be fine really, I'll watch it but aren't very emotionally invested.

Its weird isn't it. When I was a child I did care a bit more about England.

However, I've always had a different relationship with England to Ipswich and I don't seem to be emotionally invested. Almost to the point where I'm really not that bothered.

Obviously I want them to win tomorrow but if they lose, I'll go to bed like normal. if it was Ipswich I'd need a few hours to "cool down" and then be dwelling on it for days (if it was a big game)

Was going to post Ipswich staying up and England lose tomorrow or England win and Ipswich get relegated. Which would you prefer I love England but I’d rather we stayed up.

I won't be peed off at all. The match against Italy was really there for the taking. We should have won that one, but Spain seem like they are going to be a great team again. They are firm favourites to win, so if we lose it's expected, but if we win that will be really special. For me the big one was Euro 96. The home tournament and defeat against the Germans on penalties. I was only 11, but I cried my eyes out.
I became vulnerable again to the Ipswich score ruining or making my mood since game KM came in, because before then I always had that feeling that it was all going to fall apart.
I don't know if this feeling is appropriate, but even when England went behind, I felt like we were going to score because ITFC have conditioned me to almost feel like that's when we kick into gear.

I’ll be gutted to be honest. I just want us to win something and these opportunities don’t present themselves very often.

I'd rather England win because we haven't won it for so long and I'm not entirely sold on the Premier League. I really wouldn't mind being in the Championship again. Relegation from the Prem will never be as bad as the last time. I wasn't actually that excited about getting into the Prem. For me it was all about securing our future financially and keeping KM.
I also really want to cap the back to back promotions with an England win.

If we don’t get it done, I’ll be hacked off. It’s an opportunity. But I’ll be fine about by the following morning at the latest. We’ve a lot of good players for the future and hopefully Southgate’s successor will be able to get the best from them.

Given how rubbish we’ve been until last Weds and the penalties a week ago we’ve done well to make the final. We are in with a shout. Looking forward to it.

When we lost the 1996 penalty shootout to Germany I was going out with an absolutely stunning German girl.

On the night of the game she went for dinner at one of her friends house and said she didn’t want to see me until lunchtime the following day and that whatever the outcome she never wanted to discuss the game with me. She wasn’t much of a drinker and despite my assurances to the contrary she was well aware that I’d be drinking heavily for the duration and she hated drunk people.

I watched the game in the pub and ended up completely hammered.

The following lunchtime she appeared at my flat and was disgusted at the state of me. She made me some food that I promptly puked back up.

We watched the final together in my flat - she loved every minute of watching me squirm.

I want to love Southgate and absolutely praise him to the hilt for what he's done with our England team over the 8 years.

And I'm not usually one for "football is only about trophies and medals etc" but considering how risk averse we've been this tournament and generally how poorly we're coached in an attacking sense, they have to deliver this win. Otherwise I'll be disappointed.

Probably not the angle you were looking for but there you go. (Ipswich losing a league game is far worse).

In Italia ā€˜90 against Germany we were the better side in that semi final and should’ve won. Although I was disappointed, we gave the best side in that competition a real going over, so in a way that softened the blow of going out for me, I was proud of that England performance. Against Spain tomorrow, I don’t know I think it will be about how we play and if we give it a good go. There’s no doubt we have been bang average in a lot of matches in this tournament and I’ve not really been that enthralled by us getting this far. Spain have been the best footballing side by a country mile. I’m expecting a Spanish victory, anything else would be a huge bonus. Play like we did in the group games and the last 16 we’ll get thumped. I just hope we approach it with a bit more gusto and bravery than caution, we’ve really got nothing to lose now we are down to the last two countries. Come on England!

I was very upset in ā€˜86, absolutely devastated in ā€˜90 and ā€˜96 and a little upset in 04, 06 and 10 : but am strangely ambivalent these days. Wasn’t even that fussed in ā€˜21. Must be an age thing. There’s also a part of me that resents England doing well without an ex Ipswich manager being at the helm. Odd really but a part of me doesn’t want Southgate to be held in as much esteem as Sir Alf or Sir Bob.

I have said since the beginning of the tournament that we win the thing and I still believe we will. It's coming home.
When the final is over, I will have a pee and go to bed.

Mildly irked but quickly over it. Also, heard from a reliable source that Southgate is definitely leaving no matter what the result and is going to a premier league club.

Hmm. I would like England to win because they are my national team. The men's team has not won anything in my lifetime.

But in some ways I feel we've fluked it (so far) while not playing all that well. Plus the hype and crowing - particularly from the flag-munching media - will be unbearable.

It certainly won't upset me the way an Ipswich loss does.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I think we all feel the same, but I don't want KM to be England manager just yet.

I thought it was announced months, if not a couple of years, ago that he was stepping down after this tournament?

At nearly 53 I just can’t get excited about England. So I’ll be fine if we lose, and fine if we win. I only really get excited aboit ITFC.

I like the way Spain play football, I would be happy to see them win. I haven't really been behind England since 1996 they were the last generation of England players I could relate to.
Not very patriotic of me, I know.

That’s a bit weird. No offence.

I also like how Spain play football, but to be happy if they win is a bit odd, as an Englishman. Sure, you might not be too invested in International football, but you must want England to triumph.

For me when I was young I was proud to be English. However the massive decline in the last couple of decades that sees Was England as the horrible place it is today makes me less proud, therefore I’m less bothered about us winning. That’s not a reflection of the players I might add. Add that to the fact we really don’t deserve to be in the final with the luck and tedious football and I’m not too fussed at all.

Yeah, I phrased it wrong, got ahead of myself. I would prefer England to win, but would be okay with Spain winning, just think the team playing to its full potential should be the winner and England have got no where near most of the time , occasionally in patches.
